Title: Importing a Ducati from NZ?
Post by: BretMorris on May 20, 2008, 12:42:49 PM
Hi there,

Anyone had any experience with importing/freighting in a Ducati or bike from NZ?  At the current exchange rate there are some nice bargains in the second hand market...if freight doesnt kill you.

Hi Bret,

I have just imported a ducati single from the US... not quite what you're asking about but there are some lessons that might be of use.

Have the shipper use a metal frame crate...you can get them from MC dealers for next to nothing. if you use wood or any organic packing material,,,, you have additional AQIS costs.

Make sure the bike is steam cleaned and have the recipts for this included.

Use a broker... they can do it cheaper as they are able to electronically lodge the forms (lower fees) with ACS.

You need a Vehicle Import Permit before it ships... this took me a month to get from the Dept of infrastructure.

Tax is only 10% with MCs except from the 5% import fee.  note tax is on bike  plus freight costs.  ACs/AQIS and port handling fees and broker equals about $500 ..then add the GST already mentioned.

A few costs but you are rigth there are some bargains outside ready for import into Oz.

Cheers,

John

I don't, but if I was considering it the first guy I'd call would be Dave from http://www.getrouted.com.au/ - a great guy, lots of experience, I've got a few friends who've used him to get bikes to and from NZ and they've _all_ been very happy with his service and advice.

big (trying to work off some of that negative-rant-karma from the other night...)

Hey John,
Great advice - One thing though - If you want to bring a bike in from the US - does it have to be a particular age? ie at least 2 years old? Can you register it here? I Imagine the same goes for NZ bikes - can you buy near new and then import?
Cheers, R_usty
