Title: Hailwood trying to save Regazzoni Post by: LA on July 11, 2009, 11:30:07 AM F1- 1973- Kyalami- Hailwood Tries To Help Regazzoni (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1r0Kwt5s_Y#lq-lq2-hq-vhq)
Post this and I'll shut up about Hailwood. This was posted earlier on the Ducati List. I admired the guy for the way he piloted the machines he put into competition - and made it look so make the beast with two backsing easy. Hell, I still won't hang off a bike until I positively have to, which is fairly rare. Video of Hailwood stopping his race car next to Regazzoni and attempted to save him. How many people would have just let the track people respond? Not Hailwood. He was awarded The George Medal, Britain's highest award for civilian bravery, for his heroic rescue of Clay Regazzoni who was trapped and unconscious in his burning car after crashing in the 1973 South African F1 Grand Prix. Standing in burning fuel tanks, Mike released the drivers seat belts and tried to pull him free. Mike caught fire himself, he extinguished his own flames, then went back into the fire for Clay. Instant response ... no forethought..... quite the make the beast with two backsing Man. Title: Re: Hailwood trying to save Regazzoni Post by: Greg on July 11, 2009, 03:58:48 PM I believe there have been several similar instances in F1, and I seem to recall James Hunt stopping his car to save Ronnie Peterson from burning to death.

Ago, Nikki Lauda, Jodi Sheckter, the Unsers, The Vukovichs, damn, even Jay Springsteen, Parker, Beauchamp, Keener, the whole Michigan Mafia seemed like a bunch of real good guys. Now look at people like Jason Lawrence, motokid, gets in 5 fights at a single race, all these punks, look at the NASCAR guys, crashing each other out on purpose and getting into fist fights. I guess it's all about the money now. Some of these guys are damn good drivers/riders, but they have this sh_tty attitude about everything.

I am sorry to say but that kind of attitude and general lack of caring seems to be more widespread throughout all of society these days. The highly payed sports figures just get a lot more attention than the rest of us. Sportsmanship, manners, courtesy, respect and genuine efforts to be a good person and do the right thing seem to be slipping. Too bad stories about good people doing good things are not highlighted more in the media. They're out there but the bad crap gets the sensationalized coverage. It's just a different era with different dynamics... still doesn't make it right. It needs to be passed on and drummed into our kids. Otherwise those standards will parish. I hope my kid is another Hailwood or James Hunt. Nothing would make me prouder.
