Title: Valve cover gaskets
Post by: He Man on July 19, 2009, 05:05:37 PM
There is such a thing right? i opened up my foward cylinder valve covers and neither of them have gaskets on them....my exahust didnt have any gaskets on them either. and im betting my top cylinder doesnt have any valve gaskets and my rear exhaust doesnt have any gaskets either.

The last person to open my bike up was the dealership. There isnt any gasket goo either. its just bare metal on metal

The parts manual shows an o-ring for the 1K motor

ducatisuite says there are indeed gaskets, $7 each he says

"efore you begin, this is what you will need: ..... new gaskets
for the valve covers (not absolutely necessary, but cheap insurance),"

mine also looks like bare metal. maybe they just disintegrated. i know after checking my valves, my H cyl looks dirty so it may be seeping small amounts of oil

I've only pulled the exhaust valve cover off of my H cyclinder & it had no gasket on the perimeter but it has an O ring that fits around the round part.  The first time I re-installed it I used too much grease & it leaked........ after a call to Stu, thanks Stu [thumbsup], I wiped off the grease & re-installed.... no leaks & my Hyper Motard black cover looks great [thumbsup]

Same thing goes on the cam cover.... green O ring that just needs a tiny bit of grease & you're good to go.  I did use some Locktite too.... just a drop on each bolt.

Like others have said...no gasket for the 1000 motor, just a green o-ring.

The 900s had a steel crush gasket.

well...half good. the ring is there for the exahust cover, but hte intake covers o ring was install improperly. it got pinched during install and part of it is on the engine and the other is on the cover.

Usually a good idea to replace anyway as they grow.....  I tried re-using the cam cover & it leaked...... new one from the dealer was blk. not green but so far, no leaks [thumbsup]
