How loose is too loose for the valves? I plan on doing the trip with El-Matador, and after spending a metric ton of money (to me atleast) on a compressor and some other equipment, im pretty broke... and i was wondering how much give can i allow my valves to before i get into problems. What happens if im a bit looser than what the specs call for. What are the new specs anyway?
Id be covering atleast 4,000 miles minimum on my bike, if not 6,000 so id have to do another valve adjustment when i get back.
Kinda depends on your riding style.
I would worry more about loose closers as they can destroy half rings.

These are the valve specs for the 2v engine (Monster, SS, ST2 etc.) Note that these are on the tight side, it wouldn't
hurt to keep them on the high side (.004" for the intake openers, .005" for the exhaust openers, and .001" for the
closers). A clearance of .000" is possible, but very hard to obtain. .000" is a condition where there is no difference
between the loaded and unloaded gap. You cannot fit a feeler gauge in between the closing rocker (bottom) and the
closer shim, but can still turn the closer shim with your finger.
Intake openers: .003"-.004"
Exhaust openers: .004"-.005"
Intake closers: .000"-.001"
Exhaust closers: .000"-.001"
NOTE: 4v motors have a whole different set of clearances, on the looser side of the 2v. I am only listing them here as
reference.
Intake openers: .003"-.005"

in the article he says that you dont need to worry about closers until .0015"

Bingo. thats what i was looking for. me and red line have a really deep and meaningful relationship. My closers are the ones that are out of spec. .07mm for exahust, and .09 for intake. Could explain the rough idling. i figure i can just buy individual shims? i think the local dealer wants $25 per exchange. :o EMS has em for $8.50 a pop
