Title: mist of oil inside belt cover
Post by: slash on July 20, 2009, 06:18:18 AM
I pulled my belt cover yesterday to check the condition of my belts before a little midsummer road trip, and found a light mist of oil on the inside of the cover near the inner/outer timing belt rollers.  Not dripping, just a confined light mist.  My oil is down a 2-3 oz in 1000 miles.

Is this is probably a leak from the timing belt roller drive shaft?
Is this an expensive fix?
What are my odds it will start to leak badly on my trip (about 800 miles roundtrip).
The bike is an 06 s2r1000 with 20,000 miles.  It was serviced at 18K, but I decided not to change the belts until 24K (to save money). The belts looked ok yesterday.

Thanks...

800 miles should be fine, the leak is very unlikely to get a lot worst to the point of not running anymore.

@ 20K, it might be the bushings/seals around the cam pulley shafts.

take a picture, then clean everything up, go for your trip, then inspect again, take picture and compare.

I had a similar problem on my S2R 800 07, turned out the Cam seal (Horz cyl) had a nick in it from when it was installed in the Factory, replaced the seal, replaced the belt's (coated with oil) and it's been fine ever since.
