You would think after 38 years I would have the whole eating thing down. Went to dinner with friends on Saturday night around 7PM. Got out of the OR recovery room around 1:30 PM on Sunday. ???
Can't even remember what I did, was I talking, or coughed, or what? Either way ended up with a chunk of filet completely blocking my esophugus and pressing against my trachea. After 4 hours in one ER they transported me to another hospital (per my insurance) and I got to stay awake all night (seems it's hard to sleep when you can only half breathe) waiting for a specialist to come to work the next morning. I had started my day at 0430 so that put me at about 30 hours awake by the time I hit the operating room. Got the mask put on and then lights out. Surgeon then spent an hour on a 10 minute procedure as it was "the worst blockage he had ever seen". He told me I was extremely lucky that it didn't go the trachea side or I probably would have not made it out of the restaurant.
I don't think I'll be having a steak for a few years.
Glad to hear you are ok. Maybe you should go with Salsbury steak for awhile.
Salisbury steak! [clap] glad you are doing better.

We wish you a merry recovery and a happy new esophagus
WOW! Glad you are OK.
Holy Crap!
That is the craziest thing I've heard in a while. My SO is a vegetarian. Maybe she's onto something.
Glad you're OK.
Very lucky man!!
If you were my patient, I'd write an order for a diet of pureed solids & HTL's.
Hmmm..On second thought..since it's you..
make that NPO until an MBSS can be performed! ;)

I deal with patients with dysphagia everyday now working with the geriatric population. I had to start CPR on an 88 y/o woman a few weeks ago who was choking on a tortilla. Scary! Happened so fast!! I had never seen a person that blue before?! Actually, she was more of a grape color!! When the head nurse opened her airway, the other nurse saw the tortilla and reached his finger in to snatch it out. Luckily, he didn't have them bitten off but he did get the food out.
Glad you are OK! How long did you sleep after the event?
Glad you made it out [thumbsup]
I had a friend in college that swallowed a bottle cap.
we were play caps, he drank the cup with the cap, forgot it was there, and wham. He ended up in the OR to get that removed too.
:o
holy sheet!
Wow dude, that sucks, glad to hear you're OK...

Jesus-all these years my mom was right-who knew?
Glad you're okay!
Am I the only one who read the subject line and thought of Soylent Green?
"Wow" is an understatement. Thanks for the PSA, although at your expense. I'll be chewing more consciously for sure!
