Title: Help please with STM crankcase breather...
Post by: GraGra on July 21, 2009, 01:41:02 AM
Is there any base gasket/washer/o-ring or other type of seal that is supposed to be used with the STM unit? Mine came with nothing - and upon removing the stock unit, notice there is an o-ring seal there.

Anyone with experience setting the STM up?

Cheers,

G

The older bikes used a sealing washer on the breather.

The STM unit used the OEM washer.

What bike do you have?

I should have mentioned - it's an 06 S2R1K - when i removed the stock unit - it has a recessed o-ring to help seal at the base. I have tentatively used this on the STM unit (but rather than being recessed, it's a flush fit between the base of the STM and the casing - so in theory, it would be a seal of sorts - but I don't think it was intended for that - I mean, to be squeezed between the Breather unit and the crank casing itself) - but I don't think it's optimal.

Thanks for your help...

I have one of these on the way and saw your post about the gasket. I checked out part numbers for the breathers from the older monsters and the 06 S2R1000 and they are the same. As ducpainter stated the old bikes use a flat washer, while the newer bikes use the o-ring. I am curious to see how the unit compares to the stock bit.

ok - I'm gonna run it for a while with the o-ring and see if there's any leakage - whilst also looking around for a washer.

I notice now on the MW site that there is indeed a washer that you can buy for the STM unit. Shoulda looked more closely and bought one - they're on ly a buck or two... :-[
