Title: Anyone know what this is ?
Post by: DoubleEagle on July 24, 2009, 04:44:55 PM
I was going to take the '07 S4Rs for a ride today and after I had uncovered it and got it out side I went back inside and found this piece of U shaped wire about 4 1/2 inches long w, a clip on each end but the clips were facing in opposite directions.

The wire was laying directly under the left side of the center of the engine.

There is writing on the wire .

It says , E32591 12 AWG 105( small 0 ) C 600 V AWM

I called my Dealer's Service Mgr. and he asked a Ducati Tech and from my description had no answer other than if the bike started and all the accessories worked to take it for a ride for a mile and back to home and if all seemed well it might have come from something other than my bike.

I did that and ended up riding for 4 hours with no problems.

Here's a picture of the object in question.

I've not seen connectors like that on Duc wiring... I think it's a jumper, as DP said, or it's off of something else.

Here may be a clue.

I inadvertently started the bike in neutral with the kickstand in the down position .

Realized that and did it again .

Road the bike for 4 hours and each time I stopprd I would restart the bike with the kickstand down.

Will it start with the sidestand down, in gear, with the clutch lever pulled in?

Rameses, the more I thought about it I do remember at a couple of places where I stopped for a quick break, I had left the bike in gear when I stopped.

When I went to leave, I tired to start the bike with the clutch engaged and the stand in the down position and the bike would not fire.

Did you use a TPO side stand warning eliminator kit?

Wait, are you not normally able to start the bike in neutral with the side stand down? I can, but I just can't put it in gear with the side stand down...

When I had my crash a year ago last April, that is the side the bike came to rest on all tangled in tall grass along the small ditch that I went in to.

I have ridden the bike probably close to 1,000 miles since then and this is the 1st time that I started the bike inadvertently in neutral with the side stand down.

Then there's the issue of what is the piece of wire the I found right under the side stand area when I went to take the S4Rs out for a ride yesterday which as I said earlier I rode for 4 hours with no problems and continued to start the bike in neutral w, the stand down.

Hmmm, is it possible that piece was put on the bike when it was repaired?

You know what....I must be getting senile. I can't remember.

I was thinking that you couldn't start any Ducati with the stand down.

Man I'm loosing it !

Only thing that got repaired and this was later like months later, was the instrument cluster went haywire and was replaced and there was an issue where I couldn't get the bike in Neutral and a spring inside was replaced.

There was hardly any sign of a crash other than mud , grass and the mirror was twisted around on the left side. A few scratches on the cases.

Is it possible ...I guess it's possible it was somehow left there from when the spring was replaced ?

I cannot start my bike with the stand down in anything but neutral. Can't start the bike up in gear ever unless it had been previously started (restarting after a stall). 06 S2R1K.

The only connector that looks like that on my bike goes to the horn.

I had a 'friend' years ago that had something like that to hotwire cars.  Could someone have been trying to steal your bike and left a piece of their 'kit' nearby?

Not a chance.

My bikes are under armed guard 24/7 other than when I'm riding one and then it is never more than 50 ft. from me in my site.

That was my 1st thought but the horn works .1st thing I did was turn on all the auxiliaries .
