My brother had an Audi in his shop one day...he calls meup laughing his ass off and says I have to come see this. So I go over there and he says to me, tell me if you can diagnose this Audi's engine troubles. He fires it up and revs it a few times and then holds it at about 4 grand...I am listening for anything wierd but don't hear it...eyes closed I begin to notice ALOT of heat eminating from under the hood so i open my eyes and the entire engine bay is bathed in a warm orange glow from the now orange hot turbo...
Oil line plugged and the bearings in the turbo were producing some MAJOR heat. Looked alot like that only the exhaust pipe was that color and not the intake pipe...

WRONG.

the oil line became plugged after the fact (from the excess heat cooking the oil) the bearings are tiny, they will melt down WAY before causing anything to glow red.

the heat was likely from the vehicle running lean, a misfire, or exhaust leak in the manifold or gasket.

I've seen a 1.8t with a bad MAF and a failed igniton coil cause the turbo to glow orange at idle.

edit:
the first one looks cool, but is kind of a waste and could be done with a single SC more efficently.

the 2500hp turbo one is make the beast with two backsin rad.

the third one is pretty cool too.

Yer right. My brother who has been wrenching cars since he was 9 and has master tech certifications from 7 major auto manufacturers had no idea what he was talking about. I am willing to bet that since the car has been running perfect for the last 3 years since then that it really wasn't the turbo and a plugged oil line since they were the only parts he needed to replace. Yup...yer right...he was wrong.  [roll]

Seriously? Is it an attempt to make your e-penis look bigger? Or is it just a natural douchebaggery reaction to something you "know"?

In my 7+ years of modding cars, a 650awhp talon and a 950+ RWHP supra, I'd have to agree that lack of oil flow to the turbo's bearings isn't going to cause the thing to glow.....  If the bearings got wiped (which can happen pretty quick) the center section (CHRA) will wobble enough for the compressor or turbine section to make contact with the housings... Also oil will leak out of the CHRA into the turbine section causing a lot of smoke (assuming the turbo is still getting oil).

Glowing or running hot is either it being really lean, or just a circumstance of the exhaust manifold thickness, ambient lighting, and load on the motor.

MOST turbo cars, run hard and pulled into a dark garage will have some glowing coming from the snail :)

I have found in my 32 years as a breaker of things that when people give you their years of experience before they give you an explaination usually means you're about to receive a colon full of smoke.

why would you let them close enough to get a smoke machine near your colon?

perhaps that is why they are called "bungs" on exhaust pipes?

Oh, OK, yeah, 2mm wide bearing surfaces can get hot enough to make a turbo glow.  [laugh]

those internal parts are made of brass (bearing surface) and steel (turbine shaft) the brass melts at around 900F, you'd liquifiy the bearing before you get the slightest glow on the turbine housing. when they melt, they do this

QuoteIf the bearings got wiped (which can happen pretty quick) the center section (CHRA) will wobble enough for the compressor or turbine section to make contact with the housings...
