Title: Won't Start When Hot
Post by: Worth It on July 25, 2009, 07:07:06 PM
So I bought a beat up '01 S4 that I'm trying to nurse back to health... I'm making progress, but here's my latest issue: The bike starts right up when cold, but when I shut it down after a ride, it won't start back up.

Actually, within about 30 seconds after turning it off, it's no problem. Longer than that though, and I've got to wait an hour for it to cool down. During that time, the starter cranks away, but I don't believe I'm getting any fuel or spark.

Anyone got any advice for me? Thanks in advance.

My ST2 is like that occasionally.  I've found that I just need to find the correct throttle opening to get it to start.  I can't tell you what that throttle position is though, since I'll try quite a few before it finally lights off.  I'll occasionally get some impressive backfires out of it on such occasions.

For some reason I'll have a similar problem with my carbureted XR650L when it's been parked for 20 minutes after a long ride.  I still haven't figured out that one either.

Just be sure that you don't crank for more than about 10 seconds at a time and be sure to turn the ignition back off for a while before trying again.  The owner's manual specifically notes this, at least for the 1997 Monster.

+1 to what Scott said.  My Bandit does this too.
