Title: Carded a Monster at Melbourne Airport Post by: ducmeister on July 26, 2009, 04:20:51 AM Carded my first Monster today at Melbourne Airport. ;D I forgot to look at what model it was but it was red and had the standard white stripes on the tank and seat cowl. Guessing it was an S2R or something.
So if you've decided to check us out "Welcome!" Cheers from the 'Meister. Title: Re: Carded a Monster at Melbourne Airport Post by: bazz20 on July 26, 2009, 09:04:04 PM poor bugger

Title: Re: Carded a Monster at Melbourne Airport Post by: Shoggy on July 29, 2009, 01:28:06 AM Greetings Guys,
Good to see so much support for Dukes, when I first started riding them they were considered a bit unusual. My first was a 1986 Mike Hailwood Replica (Mille.....last of the big desmo twins), not exactly an easy bike to live with, uncomfortable after a couple of hours but man the twin pipes sounded awesome! And I had to clean and polish the thing after every ride. The Monster is much easier as a day to day ride (it gets used every day, rain or shine), finding it very reliable, riding position is fine.....just doesn't quite have the exhaust note that I would like....any reasonable priced suggestions welcome! Would have loved to have gone for the 1000S4R or even the Sport1000 but getting this one past the minister of finance was enough of a challenge! Cheers [thumbsup] Title: Re: Carded a Monster at Melbourne Airport Post by: Betty on July 29, 2009, 02:28:37 AM .....just doesn't quite have the exhaust note that I would like....any reasonable priced suggestions welcome! Sounds like you are hinting at coring the stock cans ... do a search ... but what do I know Title: Re: Carded a Monster at Melbourne Airport Post by: Spider on July 29, 2009, 02:31:37 AM the science of large steel pipe hammered through the baffles....my old 1000s had stock pipes that were 'altered' and boy did it sound good.
so research away...it has been done and does work! Title: Re: Carded a Monster at Melbourne Airport Post by: bazz20 on July 29, 2009, 02:38:42 AM coring your stock cans is one of the cheapest and best mods youll do and shit easy cheers bazz
Title: Re: Carded a Monster at Melbourne Airport Post by: Spider on July 29, 2009, 04:33:04 PM coring your stock cans is one of the cheapest and best mods youll do and shit easy cheers bazz what's the better techniche....big bar and knock out huge amounts....or a thinner bar and put lots of holes through the baffles and that way you can 'slowly' core them? I take it you undo the can from the s pipe and then bang down vertically? Shoggy; let us know (update this thread) once you've done your research and conducted your mod! BTW: Mate, you're not into skateboarding by any chance? Title: Re: Carded a Monster at Melbourne Airport Post by: bazz20 on July 29, 2009, 05:35:21 PM the best way is too take the baffles out completely doing any other way is going to cause damage to the aluminium outers , the baffles are stainless and are tough plus with the baffle removed completely gives a deeper sound [thumbsup]
Title: Re: Carded a Monster at Melbourne Airport Post by: Dannog on July 29, 2009, 09:36:54 PM Welcome Shoggy, great to hear about another all weather commuter! Man I lov going to work almost as much as going home!
Title: Re: Carded a Monster at Melbourne Airport Post by: DosVerde on July 30, 2009, 12:47:08 AM Hi Shoggy, don't worry if you stuff your coring mod, I have a spare set of cans sitting in the shed.
I assume you're gonna core them, every one is saying thus .... ;) mods are addictive round here. Title: Re: Carded a Monster at Melbourne Airport Post by: Spider on July 30, 2009, 12:52:07 AM the best way is too take the baffles out completely doing any other way is going to cause damage to the aluminium outers , the baffles are stainless and are tough plus with the baffle removed completely gives a deeper sound [thumbsup] I didn't think that they were 'removable' in the stock cans mate? (in aftermarket Termis etc they are)....the ones on the old monster certainly weren't...they were punctured. anyway shoggy will educate all us degenerates once he gets the details. nice offer Dos (back from the dead?)....I'll take your wheels and fender then! Title: Re: Carded a Monster at Melbourne Airport Post by: dragonworld. on July 30, 2009, 01:15:29 AM Nothing is "non-removable". Heh, heh.heh. [evil]
All jokes aside there are a couple of companies that advertise "recoring" of stock mufflers. I think I've seen one in AMCN?? [thumbsup] Title: Re: Carded a Monster at Melbourne Airport Post by: bazz20 on July 30, 2009, 01:27:25 AM okay cut 2 flat strips in the end of the can take out secondy baffle , slide end cap of , slide outer sleeve off revealing primary baffle , run drop saw down and leaving 1cm cut off baffle run some silicon around ends and replace and rivert at each corner put back on bike ,not only will have music to die for but you just got rid of 5 kilos , shouldnt take any more than a hour , [thumbsup]

Title: Re: Carded a Monster at Melbourne Airport Post by: Shoggy on July 30, 2009, 03:26:53 PM Thanks for all the feedback guys. Haven't sat down yet and looked into the can coring process, when I do get it done I will post the results. One question though, for the guys who have done it before, can I control the change in noise levels? Want a better note without waking the neighbors morning and night (shiftworker!). ???
Title: Re: Carded a Monster at Melbourne Airport Post by: mattyvas on July 30, 2009, 03:33:36 PM Sorry it's taken me a while to chime in.
Welcome Shoggy...... See cards do work, if we get one in five people carded we'll do well. With summer coming up if you need cards let me know there are still some left in the box. cheers Matty... Title: Re: Carded a Monster at Melbourne Airport Post by: Spider on July 30, 2009, 03:45:57 PM Want a better note without waking the neighbors morning and night (shiftworker!). ??? Want a better note without waking the neighbors morning and night (shiftworker!). ??? yes you can regulate how much noise , firstly the end cap which has to come out first take care removing this as they are very tight fit but it will reduce noise by half , if you still have the cat you wont ever be too loud cheers bazzTitle: Re: Carded a Monster at Melbourne Airport Post by: timjim on September 08, 2009, 08:05:29 AM Hi folks...like Shoggy, I ride daily and want a better noise without going to 4k+ termipipes...grrrrr...or making TOO much racket - but i'm bloody useless with anything where you can mess it up or scrape your knuckles...anyone know somewhere really good in Sydney (North Side, but doesn't really matter...) that could do the 'core' job?? Would it affect the remaining 12 months of warranty I have?
PS: the advice in this thread has been most helpful so far, thanx. Has made it worth joining the forum already... Welcome Shoggy,You can read my post here http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=505.0 (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=505.0) re the can coring process, there is a couple of others on the board, just do a search. There is a couple of things you can do to reduce the volume, one is putting the end washer back in, another is to graft a tube in there and wrap it with some muffler packing. I'm pretty sure that somewhere in the board I've seen a full description on how to do this. Title: Re: Carded a Monster at Melbourne Airport Post by: Spider on September 08, 2009, 12:02:13 PM Tim Jim,
is that a S2R1000 in the picture? If so I had my Termi's for sale for $1500.....so it doesn't have to cost you that much. Coring is cool too! Have a good ride! |
