not sure if any other states got hit with this, but NY state is now charging everyone who buys online tax. I just got hit on Amazon and Harbor Freight. and amazon says its NY only and they are appealing it. I think it only applies to a retailer who has a location in that state because my compressor of northern tool didnt have tax since it was shiped from the manufacturer.
this blows. i just lost 8.4% to the govvie who will do political things that i dont agree with 50% of the time.
Move to California. [roll]
Move to NY first
You know, you can be sure of two things ;)
My advice is to 1) stop buying stuff or barring that 2) stop buying stuff new.
Also as a student, you haven't seen real taxes yet. Wait'll you get out. :P

What is this "snow/freezing/heating oil/pellets/firewood/riding season/salt on roads/etc" you speak of? :)
Ohio is fun. If there's an in-state retail outlet for your web purchase, you pay sales tax. If there's not, you're supposed to pay the sales tax at the end of the year (a USE TAX). Yep, you have to voluntarily remit the appropriate amount for your web purchases for the year when you file.
One of the few tax breaks teachers get in this state is we can buy ONE computer per year tax free. However, because of how online taxes are collected from internet sales, it can't be done online and you can't file for a reimbursement. So much for internet deals on hardware.
I think this has been out for a while. I have bought things online, and if they have a distribution center in your state, you pay taxes. It is the same thing as those TV ads. Usually at the end of the infomercial, in small print, it will tell you which states need to add sales tax.
You have no idea what taxes are until you get a business license. You'd think your sole purpose for being born was to do your taxes.

Ah. We do those instead of income tax.
And last I heard, New York had all the things you list PLUS the tax the OP referred to.
