Title: Started my Tailchop (Color match opinion?)
Post by: kumabull on July 27, 2009, 04:50:56 AM
Good morning,

In anticipation for my compwerks kit I began the tail chop procedure. I tried 2 methods 1 being a pipe cutter and the other a hacksaw.

The pipe cutter option was an epic fail. it caused the paint to crack and chip away where the rollers were located leading me to repaint the ends of the frame.

Hacksaw was easier to use and with a little cleanup for me is the recommended option.

Please throw in your comments as to the color matching on the end of the frame i tried my best to get it as close as possible.

PICS: sory there lo res but the color still shows through.

I will try to get higher res pics asap,

Thanks,

Charlie

PS. does anyone know if there is a layer of clear on the frame ?

looks ok to me.

the exact same thing happened with me, actually. pipe cutter (those little roller-type) -> paint cracked and fell off. my solution was some flat black rust-oleum to prevent rusting and then i put two rubber chair leg caps on the end. ($1 in lowes.) it looks surprisingly well.

I used the pipe cutter too. Took a long time and chipped the paint, but the cut lines were pristine compared to a hack saw or dremel cut off wheel...

Do you guys think the color matches and does the frame have a clear on it ?

Ha, I thought I was was only one who botched my paint with a pipe cutter :).

My frame is the metal flake black so I can't help you on the color, but I think this solution may work with the red frame just as well.  A 3/4" copper plumbing cap fits fery snugly over the end of the subframe (I had a file a little bit because I jacked up the cut).  I powdercoated mine black, which actually may look pretty good on your bike.  The problem with trying to match a color exactly (especially with a part that small) is ending up with a slight discrepency in colors, which just looks stupid.  A quick coat of black, some contact cement and I just chucked them on.

I've seen good results with the caps hunduc mentioned too.

Wow, I didn't know the pipe cutter idea was so popular. I wonder if I was never warned of the flaking paint problem because, like me, everyone was too embarrassed.

Chair leg covers worked for me too!

Yes, I'm pretty sure there is clear on all but the Dark frames.

I might put a Note in my Tail Chop Topic in the Tutorials section, don't use a Pipe cutter, or you will be repairing damaged paint

Edit: Done, note made in the Topic.

Using a pipe cutter is still cool. However, if you use it. Wrap the area where the pipe cutter will come in contact with the frame with some of that blue/green painter's tape. You know the ones i'm talking about. The pipe cutter will do its job while the tape protects your finish from the pipe cutter.

indeed ! good call on the tape and thanks for answering my questions !! the clear coat I put on made the re-paint look flawless. I had a few friends try and see if they could tell if i touched it up or not and no one could.

so all and all live and learn. and i brushed up on some painting skills too. 1 coat clear wet sand with 2000 grit and follow up with second coat good to go!

You should use the tape regardless of what cutting tool you use.   :)

If you can get your hands on one, a portable bandsaw works fast and good.

dont get me wrong I used tape, I was saying that taping where the rollers on the pipe cutter contact was a great Idea  [bang] [bang] i wish I had thought it through more.

Looks nice man. Except there appears to be something hanging from your bike, right over the rear tire...

same business on my tailchop with the damn pipe cutter...i left about 3/8" extra frame on there, so i'm just going to hack a little more off with the ol' hacksaw maybe... it's not bothering me too much really... people focus more on the zards and other tasty bits ;D
