SMART car owners have been left Smarting over a new craze â€" for chucking their motors into canals.
Dutch pranksters in Amsterdam have dumped dozens of the tiny two-seater cars into the city's waterways.
And now police fear the bizarre trend will spread to the UK and the rest of Europe.
Eco-friendly Smart cars are small enough to be picked up by just a few people and dumped into the Dutch capital's canals, reports De Telegraaf newspaper.
One victim Casper de Jong was woken by police after they found his Smart floating in the waterway outside his apartment.
Mr de Jong said: "Several weeks ago the same thing happened to my companion's Smart. Both cars were a complete write-off."
One Smart sales worker said: "We're not supposed to talk about this because the police don't want the craze to spread but we've had quite a few drowned cars returned to us."
I wonder if the same will happen with the Tata Nanos when they go on sale?
you'd like your tata' and your nono's tossed in some Dutch canal wouldn't you?

no, I'd rather just put my finger in the dike.
Did someone mention the Dutch rudder? [laugh]
Well this is great news!
We have found something positive about American cars.
Let's face it, nobody is going to gab a few friends and chuck a Tahoe in to a canal.

That only happens in the red light district.

+1
that is great.
A few friends and I thought about flipping one at our local bar a while back. Figured it would take 2-3 people to do it.
Amsterdam is such a cool city, all sorts of crazy shit happens there.
If I had to live in Europe, Amsterdam would be on the top of my list. I enjoyed my time there.
to appease the green left and build a eco friendly car, GM's new spokesman/car czar Barney Frank announces the " Salad "

an RS is currently in development.
all I can say is....not that I am condoning this behavoir...but it seems a great way to get one in shell format for to put a Busa motor in it and then drive it like alot of people do in the UK now...

It's a thought that certainly occurred to my bf and me when we happened to see a Smart car in SF neatly parked, in a section clearly signed for "Motorcycle Parking Only." It took up exactly two moto spots.
We were walking, so it would have been on principle only, and we were on our way to get a beer, sooo, not this time.
Still. If we'd been riding ..... [evil]
Didn't people used to do pranks like this with the original VW Beetle?
JM
when i was in AL one of the teachers had a geo tracker.
a few of the guys from the football team were always picking it up and moving it.
once it wound up on it's roof (the actualy soft top was off and it was resting on the roll cage)
During a party in high school, we moved a guy's Geo Metro into the front yard from the street. One person on each corner was enough...
We lifted a friend's chevette onto a stack of cinder blocks - I think it took 6 people. The guy was a hothead and decided to get the car down by himself using a floor jack (on soft dirt). The jack tipped and the foot of it went THROUGH the gas tank. We patched the tank with some crazy adhesive and crushed beer cans.
