On my way to the office for my Monday morning meeting at 730 I take the I79N to Rt5 East exit. It's a 2 lane ramp and I am in the left lane and am first in line. There's a pickup in the right lane first in line.
The only option is to turn right (east) as Rt5 is one way in this area (also a two lane each way rd)
The light goes green and I pull forward and head on my merry way.
A guy coming the other way runs the light big time.
I am 75% through this turn (probably a 75* turn) I have about 2/3 (maybe more) of my lane covered by my turning vehicle (07 Suzuki XL-7) and a car passes me on my left, between me and the guard rail.
He us using as much of the berm as he can and not be scraping the guard rail.
I don't know how he didn't hit me. Im guessing 12" between my LF corner and his car.
The funny thing is that i've always been open to getting hit in this car as I want it totaled as that's the easiest way to make it go away.
it's not a financial thing (though I never mind owing or paying less) but I just don't like it.
It's a long story why im driving it so I'll just leave it at that.
So I almost got my wish.
I figure if I had pulled away from the stop with any more throttle he would have torn off the front corner of my car.
Or worse, impacted me in the driver's door, or between the driver and passenger door.
If that was the case, I'm pretty sure I'd have gone for a ride in the van with the blinky lights.
And in the shower this morning, I suddenly realized that if I had been on my bike (which I often am on Monday mornings) I'd have pulled away from the light in my normal fashion (which is way faster than a car)
This would have put me right into his path.
If I'd have ridden to work yesterday I don't think I would have survived a hit like that.
I think I'd be dead. Though, to be fair, I look both ways when leaving a stop sign or stop light while riding. I do it when I drive too, but for whatever reason I don't at this light. Or didn't before now.
Everyone be careful.

You can't think about the "ifs" like that. If your aunt had balls, she'd be your uncle.
Glad everything turned out well for you, tho.
There were a lot of variables here. I get that.
Everyday there exist many many variables that could bring about my end providing everything goes just so.
The chances of that are slim.
What I'm recognizing here is that I'm keenly aware that the number of those variables shrank considerably.

In his case, I agree with all of the "ifs". All of his ifs were not only plausible, but a normal occurrence for him. It was a fluke he wasn't riding the bike...
same shit happened to me except i was on a bike and coming off the q'boro bridge and some old pregnant dog ran the light in her M3. i really wanted to kill her, she looked at me with baseball sized eyes like i was some kind of devil

Were you lucky in a number of different ways? Hell yes!
Should you let it keep you from living your life, or change how and what you do? Hell no!
After my bike wreck back in May, it took almost two months to get the bike back into rideable condition, and that meant that I didn't ride for those months. When I got back on, I was surprised to find that I was not mentally ready to go balls to the wall, the way I've always enjoyed riding before the crash. My first ride was 2 days before a scheduled group ride with a bunch of riders that ride aggressively. I made the effort, and went on the ride. It took a while, but I got most of my mojo back by the time we stopped for breakfast. I refuse to let the 'what if's" spoil my fun.
My little sister was always the responsible one. went to college, got a job that she didn't really like, but it paid the bills, spent her vacations either at home, or within a few hundred miles, drove a Taurus wagon, etc. We used to argue over whether she should lighten up and live a little, and she'd always say " When I retire, I'll do all the fun things I want ."
She died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 36.
Left a nice inheritance.
If I started thinking about all the what if's, I'd never get out of bed.
