Title: Thousand dollar price tag for one dollar worth of plastic
Post by: tim_golfer2 on July 28, 2009, 05:59:57 PM
Recently noticed a crack developing in the clear plastic cover over my speedo.

Just booked my bike in for a service and mentioned this to mechanic. Asked if they thought this was warranty work (as the bike is just about to turn 2 y o). As it has not been given a knock they thought it ought to be covered and suggested I talk to Frasers. But my mechanic thinks that it may well require replacement of the whole dashboard as the plastic piece is not supplied separately. Cost $1200 +  Thank goodness for warranty.

Something wonky with that bit of design!

Let me say you are well lucky if Fraser fixed that under warranty.
A crack can occur from normal road use, stones can fly around and end up cracking the plastic like that.
I have seen a few bikes like that and infact just before I sold my 620 I found a small crack that could
only of happened from the road trip to WSBK's earlier in the year.

Has happened to both lenses on Jukie's 620 (an '02) ... but didn't develop until after warranty expiry. I remember reading about a couple of other cases on TOB too I think.

Maybe one day we should do something about it [roll]

Valid point Matty but when I run my fingers over the crack the whole lens feels very smooth. Not as though there has been any external impact from a flying object. Not many flying rocks between Coogee & La Perouse which is mostly where it travels.

I'll just try my luck with them

It's always worth a try.
As Betty has said I think the 620's seemed to suffer from this for whatever reason.
Hope you get on well with it but don't be surprised if they question riding conditions and site normal wear and tear!
Which for most of us is crap cause we all look after our toys like they are part of the family.

surely there'd be a bloke out there who could fashion a replacement with Perspex or what ever?

Its the opening up of the cluster that scares me ... some things just shouldn't be messed with (or more correctly, I shouldn't be allowed near any such thing).

Same issue with my 02 620 a few years back as both lenses has a small crack from about 2 or 3 yrs old.
Instrument pod comes apart easily enough - at least on my model.
Brought the top (lenses) second hand from a US member for $50 (incl postage).
There's a thread on this issue complete with pictures on how to replace, as well as my account - Might be on the old site as it was a few years ago.
Just make sure the rubber gasket does not crease when putting all back together.
Rgds,
John

A problem not limited to 620 I'm afraid. When I was looking to buy I saw an S4 with cracked glass on the guages.

I did a search (on the old forum at the time) and found it was a reasonably common problem.  :-\

If you're concerned about doing the job yourself there are instrument repair places around that should be able to do it for you.  Generally I've found the prices for labour not too bad as they know what they are doing and can get stuff done in a reasonable time frame.
Might be best if you could supply the parts yourself though.

Told by the guys @ Flywheels that earlier models had imstrument pods on earlier model 620s that allowed access to repair this problem but the design of later models (mine is '06) does not allow the same fix.  (But I guess where there's a will...)

Spoke to warranty repair person @ Frasers Concord today who told me to bring it in on Monday for a look. Seemed a positive conversation.

I will report the result on Monday.

Thanks for all the input guys. [thumbsup]

Some good news.

Took the bike in on Monday for Frasers to have a look. They then needed to get pre-approval from Ducati.

Got a call today from the lovely warranty lady @ Frasers (Kerry?) who has been a pleasure to deal with. She advised that warranty repair (replacement) has been approved and I will be contacted when the part comes in. [thumbsup]

What a relief. Hope this one lasts a bit longer!

Thanks for the input everyone.

good idea spider. I will take her in something. She did say that she wasn't sure when she lodged the claim how it would be received.

Hey tim,

I only just found this thread - congratulations on the result! Damn nice of Ducati & Frasers to cover this under warranty - I'm guessing they could very well have claimed it was caused by wear and tear, and not because the part had failed.  [beer]

+1 to flowers.  [thumbsup]
prolly -1 to the pic of spider (or wait until they finish the repair: better safe then sorry)  ;D

Took the bike over to Frasers today to leave it there for the instrument cluster replacement booked in for Monday.

Guy that I saw in servicing said that it was only a 15 minute job. They did it while I waited and I rode it back home.

Got to say these guys have been great.

Maybe the guy today saw the photo of Spider I had given Kerry who got the warranty work authorised and he thought he was a chance. [laugh]

I went to ride to work today and found both of the lens on the instrements have cracked. I can't believe it! Perfect one day and stuffed overnight (parked in garage) the next.

Tim_golfer2 did Frazer replace the lens or the whole cluster? I'm wondering if I can order the replacement lens from Frazers without the warranty claim as I'm well past that now.

Danno,

They swapped the whole cluster! I gather on earlier models you can get lens out but not so easy with later models.
