Got my invitation today - it rocks. The first step in setting up the account is to pick a Google Voice number, and I only wish I could have ported over my cell number. I also wished that 713 ### b00b was not taken already :)
So far, I am getting beta-ish issues - the recording I did on a test call still hasn't shown up, but everything else I have tried (sending my friends anonymous SMSes) has worked perfectly. Anyone else using this yet?
no, I would like to. could you send me an invite?
Steve - hook me up once you get up.
I just had the one, and it came in through my gmail account. I am not sure where I was in line, I think I signed up once last year, then again when I heard the first invitations were sent out.
Sorry man. I hope you get one soon [thumbsup]
I see. no worries.
I thought it was like the gmail thing, you get invited sign up and you get 100 invites or whatever the duce it was...
I signed up for an invite on the site. I've been using skype for the something I would like to see how it works internationally

"You are invited to open a free Google Voice account."
Yay!
"Please note that Google Voice is only available for sign up in the US."
Damn.
big (I'm probably going to see if I can set it up while I'm over there in August...)
Just received my invite today. ;D
Picked a number that would be local to my parents. Maybe now they won't complain about having to call me since it is long distance for them.
What is this?
You have a number on there and then link it to your current mobile number?

Yup.
Also, if people call your Google Voice number, you can get transcripts of the voicemail you can read online.

For those who are selectively literate :-* RTFL
You choose a Google voice number -they will give you an option to choose one in your area code, one that spells out something, whatever - then you can set up the google voice number to ring whichever phones/numbers you currently own, like your house, mobile, etc. You can also initiate calls from the google voice page, send SMS, listen to voicemail on your PC.
There are some other neato features, like listening in on voicemail, with the option to pick up the call, voice recording and others. I am seriously thinking about dropping my personal cell, distributing my google voice number, and using one mobile phone. Like I mentioned, it would have been cool if I could have ported over my existing cell number, but this is not available yet.
If you SMS the google number, will it relay it to the designated mobile number you have assigned?

Wow, that's pretty wild.
I'd just be afraid they'd shut the service down and you'd lose the number everyone had for you.
google needs to make a motorcycle
I've been using for a few weeks now. Haven't started giving the number out too much... Used it to post a craig's list ad so I didn't have to post my real cell number. Worked just fine. Cool features. The voice mail transcription doesn't work all that well yet....and most people that have left messages were very mumble-y, So I can't blame it too much.
Google will give invites out to existing users.

I don't have invites yet, but I will post up when I do.
I have one invite, possibly two. PM if you are interested...

The invites will show up under your calling credits, in the lefthand column if you haven't changed your layout.
I don't think calls from Europe will be free if you get an invite to them. They can add their US phone number (roaming in EU) to their Google voice number, but they will need to pay for whatever roaming charges when they make or receive calls.
If they have an EU SIM (bought one to put in their GSM phone), they won't be able to add that number to their Google Voice number.
