Title: Speculation 2 Post by: CougarSlayer on May 21, 2008, 12:53:26 PM So just found out the s4rs has been discontinued from my local dealer since it can no longer meet European EPA standards to take affect in 09. Now that I can not upgrade me current ride to a 4V what will be the 4V replacement. Any takers please inform me since I am not informed on whats next. I did see the 696 in person and though it would be a bike I would consider I feel like I would just crush the bike since I am about 6'0" 230 lbs plus I am looking for one or two more ponies.

They may come out with a new model that can integrate the new requirements better, but to say, no more 4V because of emissions is not true. That means everything but the 2V monster, hyper and multi would go. Title: Re: Speculation 2 Post by: DesmoDog on May 21, 2008, 02:41:07 PM Ducati has four valve engines that will pass emissions (848, 1098) - if four valve Monsters go away it won't be emissions that killed them! I can see them phasing that particular engine out and taking that model with it though.
Not for nothing, but last I heard it was easier to get a four valve watercooled engine to pass emissions than a two valve air cooled design... Title: Re: Speculation 2 Post by: Monstermash on May 21, 2008, 05:04:42 PM I agree with DesmoDog and Printman. There will be a replacement, hopefully it won't be based on the 696. [roll]
Title: Re: Speculation 2 Post by: Howie on May 21, 2008, 05:50:08 PM Emissions are easier to control on water cooled multi valve engines, that is why air cooled Beetles and Porches faded away. Just time for a replacement.
Title: Re: Speculation 2 Post by: Dave R on May 21, 2008, 09:48:18 PM not sure if I agree with the 4 valve w/c motor being easier to meet emission standards theory. I think it may have more to do with sound levels emitted from air cooled engines vs w/c motors that will affect their future. As far as the current S4RS going away goes, that 999 motor has it's 5 year certification coming to an end and it would make no sense to have it re certified on a global scale to run it for one or two more years.. A new naked 1098 motored Ducati would be entertaining 8)
Title: Re: Speculation 2 Post by: Big Troubled Bear on May 21, 2008, 10:29:36 PM With regards the emissions on air cooled versus water cooled, the tolerances on air cooled motors have to be greater the water cooled thus more nasty emissions to try to control as there are greater ring cylinder blowby.
Ducati are not the only manufacturer to suffer as there are rumours that BMW are designing a replacement for their boxer air cooled motor which has just as much heritage as the air cooled desmo L twin from Ducati. ??? I should have been a little more clear -panthro Title: Re: Speculation 2 Post by: CougarSlayer on May 22, 2008, 05:01:20 AM Off topic; Few months ago I heard an information that ducati is discontinuing M695 because of the 696. And that the production would stop Jan. 08. My dealer told me that there is absolutely no stopping and that 695 is in full production and sale until 2010… As you said – speculations…. Yup heard the same thing from a local dealer here in boston also his complaint about ducati now is that they have no real beginner bike. The 620 he said was the ducati beginner of choice now with that being gone most people that are looking to buy a ducati either get a 4v or the 1000 sales for him on the 695 and 696 are not great but are doing ok. Title: Re: Speculation 2 Post by: OddBall on May 22, 2008, 06:27:30 AM 695 is an '08 model, 696 is '09. A monster '848' would great. Equivalent power to the s4rs tc (4 more horses, 6 less torque) with less displacement, less weight and a newer generation powerplant. They should be able to put it together as economically as they have the 848 and 696 now. Say $10,500 as long as I'm hypothetically building I'll price it too. [drink]
Title: Re: Speculation 2 Post by: SKOM on May 22, 2008, 06:40:12 AM I'll take 2 [thumbsup]

[drink] The 848 monster would be a great monster but I still want my dry clutch. So with that said if they did decide to do one with a dry clutch what would that do for the current 848 sbk line add another 1 grand to the price which would make it only a few grand less then the current 1098. So in theory it would be better just to create a 1098 munster and get over with.-panthro. PS Its bad enough that the current 848 falls into a price point pretty close to the current stock 1098 and for what you get with the 1098 I would pass on a 848 any day of the week. Title: Re: Speculation 2 Post by: NeufUnSix on May 22, 2008, 11:41:09 AM I never trust dealerships. I've heard one too many Suzuki dealers claim a replacement for the TL1000 was imminent - after the SV1000 came out. It's been imminent for, oh, about 5 years now.

Title: Re: Speculation 2 Post by: LA on May 23, 2008, 06:53:52 AM I wish they had put the 104mm bore and cases from the 999R and the stroke from the 996 together along with the 40mm valves from the current s4rs (999s) heads and a Termi kit. It would be a stump puller at 1121cc and would leave everything in it's class for dead.
Just have to settle of a 1098 based nekid I guess. LA Title: Re: Speculation 2 Post by: Duck-Stew on May 23, 2008, 07:02:56 AM The 696 is a given.
I'm thinking the 1100 engine will end up in the new monster frame. I also think the SSSA will be added soon enough. The 'top notch' Monster will be (I think) 848-based but tuned for slightly more mid-range. I think one of the considerations they took into account when building the new monster frame was that the throttle bodies and air-box from the superbikes could fit inside the new monster frame. I always thought it was odd that the 4V Monsters (especially the S4Rs) had to 'get-by' with the ST4/S4/916 throttle-bodies. The dealer will still be able to service them. What is the usual schedule for this type of thing
