In case you were curious like me, my " R " will do " 101 mph in 2nd gear.  "

Tested this past Friday afternoon.

I was on a 1/3 mils straight and decided I wanted to know , so I ran it up until the shift light came on and short shifted to 4th and coasted into a small town at the end of the straightaway.

No, the 620 should be able to hit at least 50 in first. My S2R800 did a hair over 60 in first.

So, having never hit the limiter, what do you do? Just leave her there and twist? My conscious wants to shift. I cant help but think that I am doing some grave damage.

You are doing damage. Bikes get hurt feelings when not properly flogged.


The rev limiter protects you from winding it up too high, so in theory hitting the rev limiter should not harm the bike.

When the Red shift light came on that was enough warning to shift for me. !

I ran it up slowly sort of. Not wide open.

I'm leaving that little bit of mystery of how much more 'til it hits the limiter wall .

My 695 with stock gearing got up to 85 in 2nd gear.

Yeah but without a cowl it gets wobbly after 110 or so.

I don't think there's much difference in gearing so all Duc's should have similar top speeds in lower gears.  I think the smaller motors may even have higher rev limiter settings?  It's only the higher gears and speeds where wind resistance is the limiting factor and bigger motors will go faster.  Am I thinking right on this?

My 696 went from 0 to stolen in 1 night ;D

P, was that doing it wide open ...or letting it rev up sort of slowly in 2nd.

So the big difference is , if I twist the throttle wide open , I'm going to get to 101 mph a WHOLE lot faster ( if I can keep the front end on the ground ) obviously.

WOT in 1st or 2nd and you'll hit the limiter pretty quick...and there is no mistaking it. It doesn't hurt anything.

Yeah, watch for that 'hitting the wall' of rev limit. I've nibbled on that a bit on my S4RS and it's surprisingly abrupt.... Hitting the limiter in 2nd WOT is like hitting the brakes ... pretty hard! ...and that's just a lil' ol monster!

Something tells me I don't want to experience that.

The reason I asked was since I ran the " R " up to 101 mph rather slowly comparatively speaking . I'm wondering if I would have got a higher speed had I twisted the throttle wide open in 2nd.

I guess there's just one way to find out !

No, it's a ratio of engine speed to wheel speed. In a given gear with a given RPM, you will always achieve the same result...

Heck, my Harley Superglide will do that!

Okay, not really, but I love her anyway.

I did grab a big handful of thottle doing 35 in 2nd gear on my S4RS once.  Stood the thing straight up; almost flipped her.  I'm just not a wheelie guy; almost soiled myself.  Very funny though.

I hope your Insurance will get you a new bike or at least one of equal value .

I know not everyone can afford it , but mine are under 24/7 armed guard(s).

Somebody try and steal one of mine and they will end up with a toe tag .

Sunday I was on my S4Rs and got behind 6 bikes and a pickup . 3 Harleys in front of me and 3 other type Sport Touring bikes right behind the truck.

I followed them for about 8 miles on a real tight and hilly 2 lane . Not many places to pass.

The 3 bikes did get by the pickup and finally we came to an intersection where the road we were on opened up.

As soon as we got started from the stop sign and around the 1st curve I opened it up in 2nd and went around the 3 bikes and as I went by the pickup I shifted into 4th gear and the front end came off the ground which I thought was cool.

Never figured I get the front air born in 4th on a S4Rs.

I've hit the "rev limiter" while in 3rd or 4th on my 998 at the track -- same engine as the S4Rs.  I was worried the first time.  It's not a pleasant experience, but the engine doesn't seem to mind.  With the limiter kicking in around 10500 rpm it's pretty easy to let the bike wind up too high.  The fast guys on the Japanese bikes ride the whole straight boucing off the rev limiter.  It sounds like an angry giant tapping out morse code.

Nope, at least not in the lower gears. You'll hit the rev limiter at the same speed everytime...

Unless you take into account road surface, rider position etc etc etc.  ;D

Generally , as fast as the " R " accelerates,  (and I think the Tach is hard to read at a glance ), especially if the Sun is shining at you, I'm just going w, the RED shift light since you can't miss that even if you are looking at the road.
