Title: Kudos for an Aussie Business Post by: dragonworld. on August 02, 2009, 09:35:40 PM Finally decided to get my DS discs straightened and headed off to Awesome Discs in Ringwood (Bob Martin Engineering is no more) with the offending pieces of metal in the backpack. [thumbsup]
Rod Camm had a look and said no probs and I filled him in on the problem with them and that the discs I have on the bike now arent a real lot better than the ones he had in his hands. He said he could do the discs in an hour and I said I would then take them home, swap 'em over and bring the others back! ;D He said "Nah just wheel her in, and while I'm doing these we can whip the others off and then I'll get them done as well!" :o Well around 3 hours later I'm done and on my way with 2 perfect sets of discs, excellent service and with a smile and sense of humour from the crew. The original discs were in a sorry state, the discs had a woofle in them but the carriers were bad and they took a bit of work to get right. [roll] Great service from a small 3 person business. They'll do mail order as well as drop off. [thumbsup] For those that follow Oz bike racing, Rod used to race 250GP bikes and got a Wildcard into the 2003 MotoGP at the Island. Unfortunately since then he got taken out by one of our dickhead drivers when riding to work and is buggered (paralyzed?) from the waist down and is in one of those stand up wheelie carts. He has had the lathes, mills etc modded so he can operate them and continues to work, good on him. There are still some genuine Aussies still out there who despite their difficulties get on with the job at hand and provide good old customer service..... The workshop appears set up for disc maintenance and refurbishment primarily but I think there are plans for more and varied brake work. One job I was interested in was coloured buttons on the carrier to disc mounting. [thumbsup] Its not the flashest premises but the work gets done. Obviously with his mobility problem (I wont call it handicap 'cos he certainly wont!) doing the shopfront, cosmetic and structural work he needs assistance, and with the financial crisis at the moment that can wait I guess. ;D Title: Re: Kudos for an Aussie Business Post by: dragonworld. on August 02, 2009, 11:10:27 PM thats great to know dagon i bet the brakes feel better [thumbsup] Heh, no more loose teeth and blurred vision. [thumbsup] [clap] Title: Re: Kudos for an Aussie Business Post by: Spider on August 03, 2009, 12:04:54 AM cosmetic wise that's great....can he make them better...replace the carrier or anything....lighten them, reduce rotating mass...or $ limit what you can/should do with the stock discs?
those Galfer wave rotors are hideously expensive....wonder what could be done with stock? Title: Re: Kudos for an Aussie Business Post by: dragonworld. on August 03, 2009, 12:26:49 AM I am tempted by the cast iron option!! ;D
Title: Re: Kudos for an Aussie Business Post by: bazz20 on August 03, 2009, 12:50:31 AM what was the process to straighten discs dragon
Title: Re: Kudos for an Aussie Business Post by: dragonworld. on August 03, 2009, 01:17:55 AM From what I could see was:
1 Check the disc carrier for straightness 2 Then any bends in disc....straighten if necessary When all good 3 Grind the disc 4 Square off disc carrier to mag surface. If steps 1 and or 2 dont work it will start getting expensive. :o Sounds easy dunnit?? My original discs took around 45-60 mins each..lots of tweaking to get everything as straight as possible so the minimum gets taken off the disc. (This is looking from a laymans perspective, but a good tradesman always makes stuff look simple I reckon! Great to watch. [thumbsup]) Title: Re: Kudos for an Aussie Business Post by: bazz20 on August 03, 2009, 01:31:19 AM thanks dragon [thumbsup]

At last!...does the new set up work wonderfully well?...smooth and shudder free?...and do you know if he can "re-button" full floaters, etc? [thumbsup]Aunty
Title: Re: Kudos for an Aussie Business Post by: dragonworld. on August 03, 2009, 03:57:11 PM Apparently re-buttoning is available and braking is now as smoothe as Jukies scar! [cheeky] [laugh]

Title: Re: Kudos for an Aussie Business Post by: Spider on January 09, 2010, 03:22:16 PM Spoke to Rod and what a great bloke....he's a big believer in the OEM steel quality and is focusing this year on altering the shape of OEM rotors to 'wave' like configurations....best of both worlds; OEM steal and a more efficient shape.
Cost to machine your stock rotors: $300 Title: Re: Kudos for an Aussie Business Post by: loony888 on January 09, 2010, 05:52:20 PM Heh, no more loose teeth and blurred vision. [thumbsup] [clap] you could always just leave your teeth at home when you ride........ ;D paul. top thread by the way, good to see positive feedback on good business' [thumbsup] Title: Re: Kudos for an Aussie Business Post by: dragonworld. on January 09, 2010, 08:04:20 PM you could always just leave your teeth at home when you ride........ ;D paul. top thread by the way, good to see positive feedback on good business' [thumbsup] I was actually told that the blurred vision had nothing to do with the brakes!! The theory was accompanied by a statement that "if I didnt stop it I'd go blind!!" [evil] [thumbsup] |
