Hey there. My local dealer is quoting $650 in labor charges to perform the 6k service on my wife's '05 S2R. Does that sound reasonable to everyone?
Besides changing the oil, are there things that I, having a good set of basic tools and a shop manual, can reasonably do myself to keep the cost down? What are the steps performed in this service, anyway?
If this subject is covered elsewhere, can someone point me to it?

The videos on ca-cycleworks (http://www.ca-cycleworks.com/videos/) have been a big help, plus check the Tutorials (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?board=54.0) section here. Now, of course there is no guarantee if it's your own labor, but these combinations and a good torque wrench have given me a lot of information and confidence.
I have not tangled with my valves yet, working up to that.

Thanks, I don't know that I'm up to doing valves yet either, but I know there are a lot of tasks involved in a scheduled service and if I can do some of the more mundane ones myself, I think I can reduce the pain somewhat.
You might want to check with your local group as to which shops are recommended.
Is that $650 just for labor or does it include parts? Does it include a belt change?

Just labor. Parts are extra. I don't know if belt change is included as part of the 6k service at this shop. They didn't break it down. I should probably ask.
Belts are not included in a normal 6K service, however, your bike is 4 model years old. Belts should be changed every 12k miles or 2 years, whichever comes first...

Yep - find out. There might well be a number of items you can handle on your own. But if you're not ready to tangle with the valves - might as well have them do the valves and belts, since to do the valve correctly, you need to have the belts off the cam pulley anyways

Wow, I think I'd take that and run.
So, if they have to take the belts off to do the valves, it's not likely there would be additional labor charges to change them, right? Seems logical to me, so it must be wrong. [roll]
They have to take the belt off the CAM pully - not fully remove them. If you've got an S2R 1000 with the DS engine, getting the belts 100% off and back on aka replacement is a PITA. The clearnace around the drive pully is very tight and the Ducati recommended method for the belt replacement is to remove that drive pully as a part of the belt replacement. So slipping the belts off the CAM pully for the valves and swapping out the belts can be very different. Some of the other engines allow one to slip the belts off the dive pully w/o much hassle.
