Title: Changing fork oil seal: Ducati Monster 620
Post by: stonescar on August 05, 2009, 12:50:49 PM
Hi guys, I'm a newcomer, so I hope I'm doing this right.

I'm in the process of buying a Ducati Monster 620ie. and I noticed oil on the front fork. I guess this means I have to change the oil seals, so I'm trying to find out how much this will cost me, if I can do it on my own etc. I'm no mechanic and I have absolutely no experience with motorcycles. My experience is limitied to some simple maintenance on an Austin Mini a couple of years ago, but I definately want to learn to maintenance the bike in time.

How big/difficult is this procedure? Where should I look for step-by-step instructions? Do I need any special tools? Where should I buy the new seals, at what price?

Thanks a bunch

Good news... if you have non adjustable forks its not that bad if your mechanically inclined.

Bad news. Since you're not mechanically inclined I'd stay away from it. Start with the basics and move up (oil change, brake pads, wheel install / removal, etc.  Adjusting suspension can be dangerous if you dont have a clue as to what you're doing.

Here's a look at the process

+1 on leaving the suspension adjustment to the more experienced. The wrenching part isn't too hard - but the result is you settings will be totally off, which is bad news

Ok, as expected. Good to hear it, though, so I don't spend money on mechanics for things I should be doing and learning myself.
At least now I have something to bargain with to get a lower price.

Thanks for the swift replies  ;)
