That does look cool.  Are you ever nervous about body parts getting too close?  Also seems like could potentially be very expensive damages with no cover to protect the clutch if you went down.

No. My foot is way back with the new rear sets I have on.(not shown in pictures). Plus I ALWAYS wear my riding boots. No squid shoes.

is there any info on how the cycle cat copes with a crash?  If I'd ever be tempted to buy a cover, I'd go for the Cyclecat if it will crash well.

You can do whatever you want to it, but if you put a hole in it you'll lose all your engine oil.

The biggest downside to having a wet clutch is not being able to show it off. The biggest upside is not having to grow a Popeye forearm.

The biggest upside to having a dry clutch is being able to show it off. The biggest downside is having to masturbate so much to keep the muscles toned. In the off season. Yeah, that's what I meant.

After going through several aftermarket covers from various brands, I ended up going back to stock. This cover is unique, in that it shows my cyclecat clutch cover off, while shielding my clutch pack from the Seattle rain it's parked in every night.

I think most plates were done when the bike was brand new and pictures taken then.   Not a lot of close up pics of the bikes then later in their life.

heh. I remeber taking my monster home with 4444 miles on the odo from out on long island from a guy who super slabs it into manahttan once a month and washes it every weekend.
I took a pic of my bike now with only 3 months of real everday riding, its about as dirty as Chchadders 695 dark thats seen almost 2 years of city riding. After a certain point the engine grime protects it from more grime, no matter how hard you try to keep it clean, its gonna get nasty as hell. :/

Just an adtional question for everyone, Is it easy to do that modification?  It seems like a great MOD but I feel clueless with my bike when I am doing mods to it, I guess that is why my bike is almost all stock.  What does it do for the performance factor besides reducing weight and looking badass?  thanks for the help.

First things first: Don't try to do this on a stock 620. The 620 have a wet clutch, this mod is for dry clutches only.
If you do have a dry clutch (wet clutch can be converted, but that would be a big mod..) I think this is a relatively easy mod. Changing the cover is really easy anyways. As far as performance.. don't think you reduce the weight much - but it will sound mean  [thumbsup]

ShiftSix, Why have you left the gasket on under the cover plate. It's a bit redundant given that you have an open cover.  :-\

you wouldn't believe how much i hesitated looking at YOUR setup before buying mine. at the end i just didn't dare to go with the gold pressure plate, it was too different from the other colors on the bike. i am planning to change the belt covers to the natural colored-windowed rizomas as well. but that is really pricey....

I've done it!  Reroute oil cooler lines at the same time when you do it, you'll simply need to order one Hypermotard Oil cooler line (as it does it that fancy way from the factory).

Eventually I'll get the clutch case itself milled for vent windows also, and/or have it painted/powdercoated to match the color of the belt/clutch covers. Or order the fancy billet SpeedyMoto piece.

Its got lots of drool worthy bits, like cf breather filter, machined plug for oil pressure sensor, etc.

Well here is mine and my good luck story...
I bought the bike not knowing the history (imported, it was a risk, but I got a damned good price).  Ordered a new clutch cover, with plans of doing the pressure plate et al later on.  I never took off the cover; waited till the new one got here.
So imagine my surprise when I did open her up to find a Ducati Performance pressure plate and gold retainers already there!

All these sharp looking dry clutches are starting to make me very jealous...  Are there any windowed options for the 696? I know there was a company making acrylic differential covers for trucks for a while, Granted the 'window' would probably get pretty grimed up from inside with oil/debris, but it might be a way for us 696 owners to do a little showing off too (without upgrading to a M1100 or spending $1500 on the dry clutch conversion..)

hi superjetduc, this is an stm cover, right? does it fit over the usual clutch, or do you have an stm clutch? i read somewhere that there might be clearance issues with this cover over the oem clutch, but i love the look... i have the same rizoma pressure plate as you.

And those STM clutchcover wires are very strong
And when i go down i think more will be make the beast with two backsed up then the clutch

There useless if you go down on the RHS. Trust me on that one!
Ditto the spaces. 5 mm will provide enough clearance. Pick them up from a bicycle store - ask for chain ring spaces and they'll get out a box of aluminum all different sizes. too easy!

Good tip, I just tried to fit mine the other day and it won't clear either.  I asked kopfjager but he has an stm slipper that doesn't stick out as far [bow_down]

Stock clutch cover milled by a friend at work. Painted and clearcoated by none other than I. Polycarb cover also CNC'ed by another friend at work. I have the clear poly and one with the DUCATI logo roughed into it. Only problem with the polycarb is that it attracts dust so it becomes impossible to see the internals after about 2 miles  :'(

Now I just ride with no polycarb  ;D and it sounds beautiful

No. Its a wet clutch. Not available on 600, 620, 695, 696, 750, 796, 800, 848, Multi1200 or any recent SportClassic DS1000.

A person could do quite a bit of work to switch it to a dry clutch system if one was so inclined. But its a big scale modification.

I've read about them for years. That design and the ring shaped one from TPO.

I don't buy it. You screw the bolts in until the spring keepers / spider thing bottoms out on the hub posts. The springs can't move any further that direction with either standard spring keeper cups or the spider thing. The movable side is the pressure plate which is already a single piece.

Now tying the posts together for rigidity, well, I just don't think its flexing... But perhaps this could help protect the posts in a crash by tying them?

I do think they look nice, but I don't find them appealing for any technical reason.

I bought mine at my shop, so I didn't know what it was called.  It's called a clutch stabilizer ring.  I just looked it up on the MonsterParts site.

The retainer should keep a spring from catching your clutch cover should the bolt loosen up.  I put a retainer on after that happened to me and cost me a new clutch hub.   [bang]

Slightly off topic...I would say that bike is an '09 696 based on the silver heat shield (the '10s are black..) but the rear part of the frame is aluminum colored on yours...mine is powdercoated black...I thought they all were...???

I want to replace my stock springs with the Speedy Moto springs and caps.

Are  there any tutorials about this? It can't be as simple as just removing the old and putting in the new.

If you not changing the pressure plate do one at a time.
One off one on. 7 Nm /5 ft lb

Or if you change the pressure plate tighten the bolts in a cross pattern
No loctite required the spring presure keeps every thing in place. [thumbsup]

Note, 5 ft lbs does not require a torque wrench. Its just a smidge more than handtight. Don't go Hercules on those suckers lest you want a snapped hub post.

OK, so now I have my open clutch cover, but what do I do when I give her a good wash? Do I cover the clutch up with plastic wrap? I can't imagine that water would be good for the clutch. I never ride in the rain here in SO CAL, but I'm sure some of you open clutch fans have?  Any advice?  ???

Water won't hurt anything. As soon as you turn it on, the heat and motion will get any water out.

Yes just carry something to wipe the housing. I usually take a disposable towel. After just a few blocks I shut the bike down. All the water spits out all over the open cover, usually laden with crud from inside the clutch housing. Wipe it off and yer good to go

I ride in the rain with the open cover too. Its no big deal. If you were to shut it off immediately after soaking it, the worst that could happen would be light surface rust that would be broken free as soon as you turned it back on.

I would advise against getting it soaked, and then letting it sit for a year or more... [thumbsup]

I just put this streetfighter clutch cover on a few minutes ago.  What do you think?  Should I paint it black to darken up the engine area and match my wheels?  Or do you think the gold look of the magnesium looks good as is?

I'm not a fan of the clutch noise,  :o (no heart attacks please, my insurance won't cover you) and I wanted something that looked stock, but was cooler than my original one (blank, plain, silver)

PS: It is a little quieter than the stock cover.  It has a noise damper thing inside it, but you can still hear it clearly.

My suggestion: Paint it black with red letters, and paints the indentations around the edges red (or completely reverse all of that). With the rest of your scheme I think it would look pretty sweet. (Actually the more I picture it, red cover with black letters and indentations would look even sexier)

Otherwise all black is good too. and paint those exhaust/leg protectors black or red while you're at it (IMO)

Perhaps somebody can help me out with this clutch noise problem.

It's a chirping sound that only occurs when the motor is warmed up. The clutch performs just fine.

My thoughts were to take the clutch apart, clean it, and replace the bearing. The bike only has 5,500 miles on it and hasn't been ridden hard.

Any suggestions? Any similar noise issues?  ??? ???

Thanks! I originally ordered gold caps because I was going for a black 10-spoke cover, which unfortunately my dealer didn't have in stock. His black covers weren't great, and I thought the gold would go with other bits like fluid tanks, forks etc.

Travman, Shiftsix, i have been looking at that EVR plate.  what's the deal with the 'progressive engagement'?

Yeah that is the EVR Anti-Clank Vented Pressure Plate.  According to the advertising it is "designed to reduce clutch noise and ease launches!  Vented design reduces internal clutch temperatures by 10% and allows dust and debris to exit the assembly.  CNC machined from a solid block of billet aluminum.  Exceptionally stylish, strong and lightweight."

I can't say that I can notice any of the claims made by the advertising to be true, but I do like the way it looks.  It definitely isn't any quieter.

Didn't think it would without affecting performance / clutch pack size.

Also, ignore that 10% as measurement can't be done like that, though it may certainly run cooler (if clutch cover is vented), those claims by all the clutch pressure plate manufacturers.

Because wet clutches have to be closed to keep the engine oil from flying out everywhere. I mean, you could put whatever fancy clutch plate/springs/caps you want on there, but you're going to have to cover it up to keep your engine running.

More info for ya.  696 and 796 both have wet clutches..I know this because I have had both.  (along with the 848)  The 1100 is the only new gen monster with a dry clutch, believe me, i wish i could get an open cover too.  I have seen people make modifications to the crank case cover that has a poly carbonate window to give us a few more options.  Also, ive heard talk of an "848 conversion" that allows a dry setup to be used on an 848 and seem to remember a discussion on the forum about adapting that to be used on the small new gen monsters.  I just have never had the bankroll to support a project like that...a couple hundred bucks for a cover and pressure plate is no sweat...a couple Gs to modify the crank case and cluch setup...not worth it IMO.  Just get good and used to your 696 for a few years and trade up to the 1100 when your ready (or an s4rs/streetfighter  [evil])

As of this year and moving forward... there is no such a thing as a "dry clutch" on all 2011 Monsters  :'(

I have an '03 620D, I'm trying to figure out if it's a wet or dry clutch. From everything I'm reading, it's a wet clutch, but it's noisy like a dry clutch. Would love to put an open cover on it. Anyone have any insight?

It is a wet clutch. If it doesn't have a cover that can be removed then it is a wet clutch. Just look at pictures of stock dry clutch bikes like the 900's and 1000DS versus pictures of stock wet clutch bikes like the 620's and 800's and you will begin to see the differences in the clutch side engine covers.

This is what happens when I am bored, have a stock cover,  and a dremel.  Still a lot of cleaning up to do then off to powder coat.

That is the awesomest clutch cover I have ever seen.

That has got to be the coolest looking cover I've seen.  I like how the spring caps look like eyeballs for the skull too.  I am so copying that idea if I ever get me a bike with dry clutch.  What color are you powder coating it?  Make sure to post pics once finished.

so the people that have an open clutch cover on M696's have replaced their OEM wet clutch with a dry clutch?

haven't seen that done on a 696 yet, not that its impossible, just likely that you've misidentified an M1100 as a M696.

Not the newest one.  It used to be easy to describe which bikes came with dry clutches: All Ducati superbikes and any other models over 900cc.   Then the MTS1100 and 848 went to wet clutch, leaving that rule of thumb a poor fit. Now new Monster 1100 is also wet.

Al Ducatis eventually will be wet :(

Quick question on the EVR pressure plate set up... I have read that they come with plate bearings already installed... so does anyone have a good just quick spiel on how the swap is and how simple...?

Here's mine, albeit a work in progress.  I'm waiting for the arrival of my Speedymoto 10-spoke cover (the same one as Destructobot - nice job!) and stainless springs.  I couldn't wait to try out the new Rizoma pressure plate, so it went on today and stays open for now.

Did anybody with the Rizoma and a 1100 need the spacers they supplied?  Mine didn't seem to but I haven't been on a long ride yet to really test it.

What kind of spacers?

Were they for the pressure plate itself?

Or were they for a clutch cover?

Rizoma supplied 12 little metal spacers.  They are supposed to go between the spring and the end caps Rizoma supply, if the springs are too tight.  They increase the space between the ends of the six posts on the clutch plate (that poke through the holes on the pressure plate) and the outside of the end caps, to make that distance the same as the OEM fittings.  I didn't think they were needed on mine, but am a klutz when it comes to mechanical things, so thought I'd check here with those wiser than myself.  Diagram below:

First I've heard of 'em.

I guess that's what I get for buying my Rizoma pressure plate second hand.

I would have thought the spacers would lighten the clutch, as they would lengthen the spring (i.e. decompress) so the pressure late would be under less tension.

If memory serves, whether or not one was recommended to use the spacers depended on the model and vintage year.  It was recommended for me to use spacers on my S4RS.  I believe they increase the spring pressure much like adding preload does to the rear suspension not reduce spring tension.

Each spacer goes below the spring cap, so it reduces spring preload. Just think about how it all goes together. It's an old trick to ease the lever effort. It most certainly does not increase the preload.

While I was awaiting delivery of the cover I rode without anything to protect the pressure plate and grew to like the look.  I'll see how I feel about the new cover but may end up taking it off again or going for something like the CycleCat DCC10's ( http://www.cyclecat.com/billet/clutch-covers/item/94 (http://www.cyclecat.com/billet/clutch-covers/item/94) ). We'll see.

How do aftermarket pressure plates help with performance?

They improve stationary speed by like 10-15%.

Potentially lighter (sometimes not - many are heavier than the stock plate) and reductions in rotating weight are always good.  Biggest advantage is from the variety that protect the spring-posts when using an open clutch cover - reduces damage if you have an off.  The open clutch cover itself offers the benefit of cooler clutch operating temperatures.


if you are going to upgrade the pressure plate, do some price checking and consider doing a slipper clutch instead. Don't worry - it comes with a purty billet pressure plate too, but offers significant improvements to function.

$hitty picture, but here is an open clutch cover my machinist buddy made for me using the one on the right as a template. Started as a bit of a joke but it turned out so well I love it! Going to probably paint it black but will see. Now I have to get a new pressure plate too!

Speedymoto clutch cover can someone fill me in on as which one it is? i can't find it anywhere. Ducati performance pressure plate, springs and caps

OK...so I went the other way...after adding a Dr Desmo Quiet Clutch I decided to dress the factory cover with some quality real CF sheet material applied to the face of the stock cover which I repainted with Krylon "Carbon" color I found at Lowes.  Once the decal (which I cut to look like the Ducati circle logo) was applied to the repainted cover, I cleared the whole thing.  I also drilled some venting holes on the bottom of the cover.

However, the steel plate that is attached to the back of the plate had a small smile as seen above at about 11:00. I was reasonably certain this was not by design, and that I had purchased a damaged part, but a Google image search rendered the above image. Seems odd, but are there any EVR owners who can verify?

I also read that the first steel plate from the original clutch pack should be removed as the EVR plate has a steel plate attached.

Can anybody verify this?

Note to self: Wipe clutch cover clean before taking pictures. The EVR plate looks too nice to be hidden so much by the cover. Perhaps a minimalist's style cover.

Yes I have the EVR anti rattle plate. You need to remove at least One of the steel plates when you install it. On my M1100 I tried one plate and did not like the feel of the clutch so I took out one of the thick steel plates on the inside of the clutch pack (There are two steel plates (Thick) on the inside of the clutch pack) as well. Clutch worked fine and had no problems with it. Also ignore the shop manual on the pack height mine was nothing like it from factory and even when it was replaced under warranty pre EVR it was not the height stated in the Shop Manual. I have some test sheets somewhere regarding stack height and the EVR, its what I used to get the best feel for my setup.

Thanks! Yes, I did remove the top steel plate. 

I can't say that it is any quieter than the stock plate with an open cover. My reasons for the purchase were bling + advertised lower clutch operating temperature. It can get up to 120 degrees here in the desert in the summer, and I have seen my engine temp get up as high as 240. 

By the way, I have also read that a cat eliminator pipe will help lower the engine temp. Has anybody out there ever noticed the lowered engine temps. with a cat eliminator?

There was hardly any difference in noise, I would not recommend buying it if like me you just wanted it to keep the noise down.
I even wrote to EVR and they were pretty lame in their answer "It is not possible to have a silent clutch" Yeah but it sounded the same as the stock plate, I posted a video a while back showing the difference

Cover on my Elefant 650.  It has a Pantah 650 engine.  Right hand side clutch slave with dry clutch.  The older ducati engines had a rhs clutch slave. in the cover.

I picked up that cover from a place in UK.  They modify them.  I painted it satin black to match the case when I installed it (Lauer Duracoat)

The older bikes had the clutch slave in the clutch cover.  Some of the Pantah models had dry clutches.  On the SS and Monster with the small case (600 and 750) they used a wet clutch, same design.  It's possible to convert them to dry.

It's a bit more problematic than the later LHS clutch slave, but it works well.

I think the new Hyper has gone back to this with a cable clutch
