Title: throttle cable too long, ideas?
Post by: redial on August 09, 2009, 07:30:33 PM
CLIFF NOTES: is there any way to shorten up a throttle cable? also, how can i safely get another nut on the throttle cable to help secure the lower adjuster?

i have a 2002 m750 with a gsxr front end and fork mounted clipons. im not sure if these mods
are causing my problems or not, or possibly i just need to re-route it

- the bike came with lots of parts that were not original (not talking mods here)
including a throttle cam that is very small, and very fast. I would guess 50%-75%

it doesnt look anything like my friends stock cams, and i suspect it was from another bike.
because of the way the cam was shaped, and the length of the throttle cable, the PO had the cam
mounted at an extreme angle, and the result was that the cable rubbed on the sharp edge of the cam, instead of pulling
smoothly along the whole curve.

after about 3k miles the cable finally frayed and eventually snapped. i ordered an electraen (sp?) 75% fast throttle cam,
and a 2002 m750 throttle cable from ducati. the cam comes in this week, but the cable is WAY too long. the cam may clean up a lot of the slack, but
it doesnt look like its going to take up all of it. both adjusters are maxed out. the bike is totally unrideable because the amount of slack causes the cable to unwrap itself
from the cam, making a throttle pull do nothing (imagine leaning around a turn and having no throttle to help pull you up :( )

my questions are

1. is there a shorter ducati cable i could try? or another cheaper brand? this one was 27 bucks

2. is there any way to tighten up the cable, like maybe a pinch bolt or something? the fast idle works with a pinch bolt and looks adjustable, and a way better mounting
system than the main throttle. what the hell?

3. the new cable came with only 1 nut on the end of the lower adjuster. my old cable had 2 allowing you to pinch the thing that holds the adjuster, keeping it secure in place
with only 1, it is not secure. how can i get another nut on here? it looks like the ball at the end would go through the nut sideways, but the cable blocks it from fitting through. im afraid if i force it, i will kink the cable, possibly weakening it, and making me go through this all again, or worse break it right there ruining a new part

sorry for the long rant, its all the most simple sounding stuff that is the most aggravating

ill post update when the new cam arrives, hopefully tomorrow. i suppose i should also just grab my friends stock cam and see if it helps

I've had good luck with Barnett, I think they still make cables, and Motion Pro, I believe either of those guys will take your stock cable, and measure it up, and make it however different that you want it.   There might be some other guys that will build a custom cable also, but those are the two that I know of.

Any decent bike shop should be able to make a cable to suit.

but no self fix? i live in bumfck and im not exactly confident in any custom work from any shop around here at all.

plus if there is a way to do it, even if its hard, it would be one of those life mechanic skills that would come in handy for the rest of my life.

thanks for the comments
