Hello,
I have 98 900M that has 41 Kehlin carbs & the Duc has just started to have a dieseling problem.
The bike will continue to try to turn over even after key has been removed...all the way til it has burned up the battery!!
Had to wait 2.5 hours for the tow truck today
any advice where to start?
Thanks
A bad starter solenoid can crank the starter until the battery is dead.

Lol, National Lampoon reference. Love those movies, wifey hates em.
+2 or w/e on the solenoid. Frequent problem.
Smack the solenoid with the handle of a hammer, and that should temporarily free up the carbon that is causing the circuit to stay completed.
BC.

+1 and if that fails disconnect the Batt then take the starter switch apart, clean it with Electronic Contact Cleaner and check all the connections. Sometimes that run switch gets debris in it and keeps the bike trying to start even if you turn the key off. You might also want to only use the key to turn the bike on and off if you don't already.
Thanks for the replies!!
Well, got the bike home...recharged the battery...ready to hook it back up & the CRANKING began!!
I am quite a newbie with Duc"s
where is the starter solenoid located?
pics would be greatly appreciated [bow_down]
Thanks
Frederick
It is mounted directly under the battery on the right hand side of the bike (while sitting on it). It's very difficult to see and get at without removing the whole airbox/battery tray but you should be able to poke it with something hard enough to get the desired results. Unless of course I'm thinking of the totally wrong starter solenoid. :P

You can't see it in this picture, but it's right behind that sticker on the frame, above the silver rectangle. If you've still got the stock fuel pump on there, you'll see a big goldish pentagon mounted to the frame instead of a silver rectangle (see where it says "Original Fuel pump mounting points"). NOT fun to get at without removing the airbox. Removing your air box for the first time is tons of fun too. [roll] Don't forget that last screw at the front of the airbox on the left-hand side of the bike. [bang]
ErkZ you are a God send!!!
I will try to "poke" it Thur.
Thanks again!! [moto]
Don't thank me unless I'm right. :P I had a bad starter solenoid and that's the thing I replaced. Instead of the bike getting stuck starting it had trouble starting and sometimes wouldn't crank. Not sure how hitting that little thing will help. :P It's a little cylindrical thing held in a rubber mount. The rubber part is what holds it onto 2 blades sticking out the bottom of the batter box.
well....Thanks to all!! [thumbsup]
it worked..special thanks to Ersk for the graphic, or never would have known what to tap!!! [bow_down]
Now, I qustion do I replace the starter solenoid?
or do some maint. tapping periodically?
Thanks again guys
Frederick
Change it! It will fail again. If you want to save some coin,

I agree that you should replace it. You might want to carry around whatever tool you used to poke it too in case it happens again while you're out.
