Title: Buying a 996...what should I know/look for?
Post by: raulduke on August 11, 2009, 08:58:52 AM
So rather than dumping even more $$$ in my monster which is already so custom I will never be able to sell her for what she is worth, I think I am going to buy yet another bike.  It seems like I can get a 996 fairly easily in the $5500-$7200 range.

What should I know about buying/owning one?

Flaking rocker arms.

that's a good point...
what motors have the flaking rocker problems?
is it all the 4-valvers?

Basically every Desmoquattro after 1995 is prone to the dreaded flakes....

For everything you every wanted to know about buying a used Ducati Superbike (compliments of Shazaam)....

If you get a 998 you won't have the rocker issue. . .

and they look just like a 996 ;D

I would prefer a 998 but haven't seen any in my $6-8k price range.

Ahh.

If you can find a 996 that's been taken care of you might consider that.

Price the rocker arms before you buy.

Hopefully, the rockers have been changed by now.
Also, used parts (but prob not rockers) are readily available on ducati.ms
I've been accumulating a few spares for my 996 there.

charging system.....
radiator overflow tank...( the one behind the triples by the headstock)- prone to crack and leak..

I think the rear stub axle...

those are possible issues to check off the top of my head...

Ask  Neufunsix if he's still here

Pretty sure the stub axle was a recall item.

It should have been fixed by now.
