Woot!  I think I can go this year.  Need to check trackday schedule.

Guess I don't have any excuse unless I am out of town, given how close we are.

Would it be inappropriate to pedal there? [cheeky]

If you pedal there, you must do it in FULL leathers & your motorcycle helmet.

Don't know if we're going as a giant group (fun, but logistics can be tough) or in small groups (easier, but it doesn't have the presence that a giant mob does), but either way I'll help lead, sweep, block traffic.

Thanks, H.  We'll do a big-ass group from Alice's to La Honda with meet-ups in the cities beforehand.  Yes, logistics are a pain, but we'll figure it out and we have more than enough time to plan.  I'll check with JohnC about the schedule to figure out a decent arrival time, but just before 12 worked well last year.

molto bene ... will be cool to have another big-ass monster ride-in @ LDD.

btw, we also need parking lot volunteers, to manage the parking situation in the front area.  this is the area we typically keep specifically for monsters only ... so best that it is managed by members of MOB.

pm me if you can volunteer ... and yes, you will get an unobtainable LDD2009 staff tee shirt to wear and keep  [thumbsup]

We'll be there!

I am a relative newcomer to the forum, but we have joined in one of the group rides.  DH has a yellow 1098 and a red Dainese jacket. I have a red 696 w/termis and a yellow dainese jacket.  And no we didn't TRY to be all reverse matchy matchy in our gear when we bought it - it was just what D Store had on sale.   [roll]

hey, someone putting oil/nails in the road is something that can happen anytime/anywhere ... and a noob crossing yhe dy can happen anywhere/anytime as well (or, you can go dirtbike riding with DTM and have nearly the same effect  [roll])

this really is a pity, as it seems that one of the residents of la honda has an issue with motorcycles/motorcyclists and does not see the bigger picture of LDD contributing 20% of the annual working budget of the la honda fire department ... which is funded by local donations otherwise.

Only because they have a thread about the wreck and one poster was behind the Norton when he got hit and another poster sold the 1198 to the other rider.  Not the normal BARF posters.  That is why there was some actual information.

Yup.

I really hope that the print version of that story emphasizes how awful it is that someone was trying to screw up an event that benefits the fire department that serves their own community.

I suppose that if we were to look at it from their perspective, I'm gonna guess that La Honda's Fire Dept. is a tad busier scrapin' up riders offa 9 than they are putting out chimney fires and rescuing kitty cats out of trees.  Get rid of the bikers and La Honda's Fire Dept. might go out on a few runs a month, instead of daily(?).

I suppose that if we were to look at it from their perspective, I'm gonna guess that La Honda's Fire Dept. is a tad busier scrapin' up riders offa 9 than they are putting out chimney fires and rescuing kitty cats out of trees.  Get rid of the bikers and La Honda's Fire Dept. might go out on a few runs a month, instead of daily(?).

agreed in theory, but perhaps a mute point ... the residents still need/benefit from fire protection that the department provides the community.

and to spidey's point, i did mention (a few times) to the reporter that LDD contributes between 15 and 20% of the yearly budget funding to the fire department, and that the residents i have spoken with (and anecdotally through conversations with larry) are appreciative of what LDD brings to their community.

we will see what gets printed in the hmb paper ... and more importantly, what the police investigation yields.

Sure, but then you throw down nails or oil on some Sat or Sunday that's not LDD.  Then again, why use rational thought when we're talking about an asshole who'd throw oil or nails on the road to make riders crash.  Oil, in particular, is make the beast with two backsed up.  It's like taht dude a while ago who strung a rope or wire or sumptin across a dirt bike trail.   :o

Yup.

I really hope that the print version of that story emphasizes how awful it is that someone was trying to screw up an event that benefits the fire department that serves their own community.

Perspective.

Let me run down the dumbmake the beast with two backsery I've seen in less than a year:

1) Every nice weekend becomes noisy.
2) Hard to get anywhere when there's a wreck (often)
3) Getting passed on the right
4) Tailgated by people with their high beams on while you're actively looking for a place to let them by safely
5) Random gathering of motorcyclists stopped...in the street
6) make the beast with two backsers in my lane. Daily.
7) Triple digit speeds on my road

At some point, your goodwill is exhausted. Sort of how tourist towns hate tourists.

I love watching the bikes go by-all of 'em. The little groups of each type, etc etc, but we don't do ourselves any favors, specifically with some of the behavior that gets pulled.

and no, I'm not saying it's warranted, but one day of the year we doing something nice, and the other 364-we annoy the locals. At some point, no one gives a shit.

That sounds a lot like the folks who move next to Laguna Seca and then complain about the noise.  DON'T BUY A HOUSE THERE.

I feel genuine sorrow for the folks who have always lived there, and whose idylic mountain communities have been ruined by the racetrack of 35, 84, 9 and others.  But for anyone who moved there in the last 20 years?  Screw them.  I don't care if they feel exasperated.  They knew--or should have known--what they were getting into.

You've just described the reasons I try to stay off the peninsula rides. Sure, dumbmake the beast with two backsery goes on in Marin and the East Bay, but it;s not so...concentrated. Or obvious.

If you were shown the area on a weekday-you wouldn't know, would you? Same goes for winter.

That attitude is exactly why nails get dumped on the corners. If we actually practiced a reasonable noise level, passes that weren't obnoxious, and could keep our bikes upright, I suspect the locals might not be trying to kill the motorcyclists.

I don't see any good reason why triple digit speeds, excessive noise violations, and being a general nuisance should be perfectly acceptable in front of my house, and not say, yours.

Uh, yeah, I would.  Didn't you ever go riding up there?  (I generally avoid the area for exactly that reason)

I'd throw nails in the street if someone did that shit in front of my house.  Which is why I live somewhere where they don't.  Besides, triple digit speeds, noise violations and being a general nuisance sounds like a successful day of riding in my book.    [moto]

Because having people annoy and inconvenience you is exactly like trying to (probably unintentionally) kill random people who may, or may not be involved in the activities that annoy you is completely understandable, Mr I wins the moral relativist merit badge for the week.  [clap]  [clap]  [clap]

On that note, I think I'll go spike the coffee at an investment bank building with something quasi-lethal, because of the current recession and all.

I might accidentally kill someone who shares a dental office with the same address, but as long as you can follow my logic, it's all good.  [roll]

He's not talking about us. [roll] [roll] [roll]

We knew exactly what the roads were like, that's part of the reason we moved here.  In fact the seller's disclosures included describing the excessive motorcycle noise going by the house.

We enjoy seeing the bikes go by.  When I'm out walking the dogs I wave to those that go by.  We help out riders that are stranded because they run out of gas or have mechanical issues.

The majority of riders are fine, but there are some assholes out there that make us all look bad.

One Saturday I was in the car heading home from Palo Alto.  Get up to Alice's, see a group of motos waiting to take off together, they do so in the middle of a clump of cars.  Some of them are able to pass cars in the twisties, some are not.  I ended up at the end of a long slow line of cars/bikes, with one moto just in front of me, someone clearly a noob riding two-up.

We finally get to La Honda, where his buddies are waiting on the shoulder for him.  He pulls over the shoulder behind them, I keep driving.  However, everybody else in his group is ready to take off and start passing me on the right in the shoulder (although they are still stuck behind another car).

A few turns later, we all turn left onto Pescadero.  However one rider missed the turn, ends up doing a U-turn on 84 (right in front of a corner), then turns right onto Pescadero, passing me on the right in the shoulder and wheelies up the hill.  They then proceeded to terrorize another car into pulling over, even though there is a safe stretch to pass there.

If I were a driver unfamiliar with motos and those roads, I would have been pretty freaked out.

There are lots of weekends where we get stuck or have to take extremely long detours because the main route through is blocked because there's been yet another accident.  Yes, I feel bad for whoever was in the accident, but how would you feel if major routes out of SF (280, 101, GG bridge, Bay Bridge) got closed down every weekend because someone pulls stunts?   What if you were scared to go check your mailbox because of motos railing down the road?

We're not excusing the behavior of throwing stuff on the road (it pisses us off to no end too) but we can understand the frustration that might lead to it.  If we want people to treat us riders well we should behave well on public roads.

BTW, so far every neighbor I've met that has found out I ride has been very nice and friendly about it. [thumbsup]

@ all ...

<soapbox> ok, i hope we are in violent agreement that it is the 1%'ers we are talking about here ... these are, as somegirl points out, the dushbags that by their idiotic acts of terrorizing cage drivers and pedestrians (either through their riding or excessively loud bikes, yes, i am targeting the dumbass harley RUBs here too), are continuing to giving ALL motorcyclists a bad image with cagers.

now, aside from these two successive years of road sabotage connected with LDD in la honda, i do read and hear too many times accounts of "responsible" motorcycle riders being targeted with road rage by cagers ... most likely brought on by a cager being buzzed by a dushbag moments before the "responsible" rider happens along.

it used to be that hell's angels were the ones that gave motorcycling a bad image/name.  the angels have gone low profile (at least on bikes) for quite some time now ... and have been replaced by the squid dushbag stunters newbies.

Oh hell-I'm not saying there's any excuse for what these make the beast with two backsers did-hell that's the road I use to go to the damn supermarket.

My point is the shitty behavior that gets seen is why no one gives a shit it's a fundraiser.
