Title: Chevy Equinox vs Toyota RAV4
Post by: ducatiz on August 15, 2009, 09:10:52 AM
Equinox AWD has best in class mpg, best warranty..

Toyota is a Toyota and RAV4 has a 3rd row seat option.

Must have AWD.

Opinions about either vehicle?  Not really considering anything else.

This is for the wife.

Want:
Crossover SUV
AWD
>25 mpg combined (Chevy has 32(!) highway, best in group)

Edmunds gave the Chevy best in class rating for 2010 model.

The Clunker money is calling.

Go drive them and climb around inside on the same day.

Unless the Equinox has changed since 2005, which it probably has since GM has been making strides in interiors, you will notice a difference between them that could sway you one way or the other.

I had an ex who had an equinox.

It was a piece of shit.

They may have improved them since then, but I dont know.

Also Chevy is a bit.... er..... liberal with their mpg numbers. My fiance's mom has a HHR and she is lucky to get 24mpg with it.

No fhe with the Rav4.

the 32mpg on the highway is for the FWD model

the AWD is 28

The old Equinox is different from the current version, body changed in 2005.

The MPG is EPA est, so Chevy can't fudge with it.

I need to look at the AWD mpg numbers, but I think the Chevy is still highest in the group, according to Edmunds.

We are going to look at them today, dealers right next to each other.

Buddy of mine has a new RAV

it is a pretty nice rig for what it is

as far as the chevy goes

a lot has changed in the 10 years since i played with a chevy 2.4

but

it goes pretty damn good for a NA 4banger

when it came out it had cooling issues on the #3 cylinder

but again, that was 10 years ago so i assume they worked that bug out

On the Toyota, it has an Active Torque Control AWD system.  It's an on-demand AWD system using a magnetic clutch at the rear differential.  When you need power to the rear wheels, it kicks in.  When you don't need it, you have a FWD ride, saving fuel.  Chevy doesn't specify what system they have on the Equinox.

Intellichoice.com has a much higher cost of ownership for the 2009 Equinox over 5 years than the RAV4 (2010 Equinox not available on intellichoice.com yet).  Mainly depreciation costs and fuel (interesting based on the EPA estimate for the Equinox).

http://www.intellichoice.com/reports/comparator/v2/comparison-fs?VEHICLE_NMB1=40274&VEHICLE_NMB2=24262&VEHICLE_NMB3=&addColNbr=0&complexYear=0&make=0&model=0&trim=0 (http://www.intellichoice.com/reports/comparator/v2/comparison-fs?VEHICLE_NMB1=40274&VEHICLE_NMB2=24262&VEHICLE_NMB3=&addColNbr=0&complexYear=0&make=0&model=0&trim=0)

Edmunds.com doesn't have a True Cost to Own for the 2010 Equinox, but based on the '09s, the RAV4 was $.08 per mile cheaper to drive.

that comparison is using the 3.6L V6 engine, we are looking at the 2.4L I4 only..   how do you set up that comparison?

yeah.  it will kill me to get rid of it as they are gonna kill it.  the most desirable of all the T5's, the R model.

if it was worth more in sale, i wouldn't do it...  >sigh<

Wow, I can't believe your going to get rid of it. That should be Micah's first car!!

How much will you get from the program? private sale?

trade in value is probably around 3 grand and we'd get the max clunker deal of 4500 based on the mileage.

private sale max about 5 grand, but not worth the hassle of $500, plus there are some cosmetic defects.. bumpers are typical of what you'd see in NYC.. not rashed but not excellent.

it's a shame as the model is the most tuneable of the S70s.  IPD sells a drop-in ECU upgrade that pulls nearly 300 hp out of the engine.  anyhow, it's a car.  not a museum.

Drove the fwd Equinox and the awd Rav4

Equinox feels better.  More responsive feel on the wheel.  Has adaptive power steering while the Rav has reguler.  the cab feels bigger even tho almost same size.

The I4 engines are "just enough" for both.  Suspension on the Toy feels more wooden and the Chev needs to be tighter.  I don't know if either hs antisway but the Chev seems not.  it's not the tires/wheels, they are the same size.

Interiors are similar but chev has nice fabric on seats with anti stain.  panel/switches seem about the same quality (i.e. plastic shit)

Rav 3rd row is for kids only but no baby seats.  i could not sit there for more than 20 minutes (i'm 6'1") and wifey said it was cramped (she's 5'4" and slim)

Leaning to the chevy.  We might look at the CRV too.  Mrs tiz likes the look...

I can't imagine that a vehicle would be sold today without front and rear antisway bars

but that is a simple upgrade if you want to tighten up the ride

i can't imagine it either, but i don't know much about the crossover designs other than they are "small/mid uts on a car chassis"

i guess i could have looked, it just seemed to have more roll in it than i would expect, then again, it has a higher CofG than the sedan we have, which has a sport suspension..

Frack...

That's hardly broken in for a Volvo.

I would cry too, if you take in for the "clunckers" program.   :(

My dad's old 240 sedan had almost 200K on when he sold it a few years ago.  He still see's it around.

How's the body?  Rust?

the only rust is a spot on the edge of the hood where the paint chipped and it worked under.  no body rust at all otherwise.

if you like volvos, just don't ask any more questions.  i've done a bit of work on it, lots of IPD upgrades.

we might just do a regular trade-in.  the guy on the lot said it looked like a new car and we might get more than the clunker program offers.

it's a '98 T5.  gunmetal grey.  interior looks new, i am anal about keeping the car clean.

Gawdamnit....

I hope they pull it off as a straight trade and not thru the clunkers program.  Hate to hear of a T5 being intentionally destroyed.

Should let me have it for a week so I can rip out the engine/wiring harness/computers/ipd upgrades and swap em out with my stock 2.4L NA parts... If it goes the clunker route.  Too bad I couldn't trade ya for my N/A... damn 1yr ownership rule!

where do you live?  I would totally do that.  it just needs to run, you can even take off the hood and trunk lids and swap out the wheels.  take the make the beast with two backsing seats out too..

although i am taking out many of the ipd stuff and swapping back in the stock stuff.  that was $$$

I just spent 3 weeks living out of a rental Rav4 in MT.  Put 1500 miles on it with probably 1/2 of that on dirt that ran from smooth dirt to hellish washboards.

I gotta say I was very impressed.  It won't win any clearance or 4x4 contests, but it was very composed on many surfaces ranging from sticky to downright slick.  I pushed that thing as hard as anything else I have driven in the dirt.  You could definitely feel the RWD kick-in and also the traction control kick-in, that is when I had it turned on.

It held camping and fishing gear for two and was comfortable to drive for me (6'4").  It wasn't the quickest thing on the road, but it had no problem climbing the many pavement passes at 70mph (gotta love MT).

A lot of cars that qualify as clunkers aren't going through the program.

Used vehicle prices are going up as the inventories are affected by this program.

A lot of clean trades will live on.

lol we don't live in Panama, autozone has pads, prob more expensive for the Toyota, but the local dealer has a "first 5 year maintenance free" plan.. buy their car and you get the maintenance for free.. no oil changes or brake pads to buy..
