Title: M800 wet clutch problem
Post by: saffel on August 18, 2009, 07:41:55 PM
Just this evening I was on my way home, at a light (in neutral); Light turn green pull clutch in, drop to first......As soon as I engage the clutch, a pop and the bike dies.  I pull off to the roadside and a small circle of metal is hanging off of the left side of the bike. Right by the/a nipple and all of the (clutch) fluid has/is leaking out of the dime sized hole.  Can anyone help me out as to WTF happened?  The "dime sized piece" fits into a "splined" bit that looks as though could be counter-spun out and replaced.

It looks as though that piece is designed to "go first" Why did it happen?  The bike is a 2003 with 14,000 miles. Should I have been aware of that?  Too much pressure/heat???  Do I have to buy a whole new master or just the splined socket?

Sounds like your slave cylinder disassembled itself.

Can you post a pic?

the original part is not designed to be serviceable/rebuildable.  (thanks Ducati!)

you'll need to buy a new one.  i would look around at some of the aftermarket swaps as they'll probably be about the same price and are a look/function upgrade (well, function upgrade if it includes a dual o-ring piston as some do).  or you can lurk ebay for a while, you'll find some folks who take their stock one off and put on a billet one and sell the old one.

if you don't get the new piston, i would take the time to swap out the old o ring if you re reusing the piston.  use the factory one and lube it well or pick up an aftermarket X-ring but make sure they are made of the right material (EPDM is the gold standard for brake parts now -- all DOT fluid resistant)

i've never heard of this happening though.  when you put a new one one, i would do a function test with the bike not running.  but there are so few things that could happen -- the pushrod backing up and ramming the piston is very weird.  i don't think that could happen as it would require the clutch basket pushing back, which it does with the springs but there isn't enough pressure or reach to do THAT

my gut says it was just a marginal part and it screwed the pooch on you at the wrong time (when is the right time??)

I have a slave from an '06 S2R800 that I could let you have for say $25 + shipping, it came off my bike at 600 miles and has been in a plastic baggie ever since, has the o-ring and seal washers.

I have already been "suckered" into purchasing a new and improved, aftermarket one.  One that will most likley out live the bike itself.  Thank you for the offer to buy though, I really appreciate it.
