G'day,

I have a set of Rizo mirrors and they look great but are as good as tits on a bull. I love the standard ones, but I want mirrors that look great. Any suggestions? they have to work though, I want to see behind me. Crazy concept for mirrors I know.

I got some bar ends off a guy in Melb on ebay. They look like the oberon ones but much cheaper. Less than $100 for the pair.

I thought they'd vibrate like a pregnant dog being out on the end of the bars but they are great. I no longer have a good view of my elbows though. they also give the bike a lower profile if you know what I mean.

In short, bar ends = good.

Do the bar end mirrors have to be taken off to tie your bike down on the Tassie ferry.  Been thinking about some bar ends after seeing Rusty's at Turismo.

I have just put on CRG L/S bar ends.
Changed from Oberon ones, I do like the Oberons still. They are small but bike didn't fit into it's hidey hole with them one.

Heather to answer your question, you shouldn't have to remove the mirrors to tie down.
Tie down from the axle, not from the forks or triple compressing the forks doesn't work for road bikes.

On the Tassie ferry they use a strapping system that slips over your handlebars.

It works very well as you will find out when you come on Turismo next year.   [thumbsup] :) [moto]

count me in on the "i love bar end mirrors" brigade - I have CRG's (the non lane splitting versions) and I have a cheaper flea bay pair before those.

both worked very well, and I'm a fan of the look, though I do appreciate that it's not a look that everyone wants...

I was in the same boat recently on what type of "practical mirrors" to mount, and I settled on "Napoleon Barren" bar end mirrors.
The only thing I had to do to make them fit my bars was to use my existing bar end mounts that go inside the handle bars.

These may not be some peoples choice but I thought they gave my monster that old style classic look.

I have a set of Ducati Performance mirrors for sale in black which mount onto the original clamps on the bars. Will fit S2R and S4R monsters. If your interested.

I use the oberon mirrors and find them very good - no vibration at all and reasonably good vision given the size of the mirror.  Heres a link to them on ebay with some good pics of what they look like on the monsters:

I've got a pair of the cheap ebay bar end mirrors too. I love em. Even though they look small, the vision they give you is way better than the stock mirrors.

Heather:   Last time I was on the Spirit of Tassie, my bike was tied down using the handlebar straps (I still had stock mirrors). A cruiser next to me was tied down using hooks attached to the frame. I didn't take much much notice to see if the hooks would mark the frame or not. Maybe you could take some rubber or sheepskin or something to jam in between.

I'll see how easy my new ones are to put on and make a decision then about taking them off on the ferry.  I do like the handlebar tie down system they use. Also depends on how hungover I will be early the next morning when they want to kick me off the boat!!!  [drink]

They are easy Heather, it's just a 5mm allen job to get them on and off.

I just spoke to my mate Cary, who works on the ship. He says they mainly use the "over the handlebar" straps, which also have the little velcro strap to hold on the front brake.

If these are not suitable, eg. you have bar end mirrors, or have offensively high handlebars (chopper), then they have a two piece strap. This attaches via a piece of webbing passing around the frame then hooking back onto itself. They will also put in a pad if the hook or ratchet look like they will contact the bike.

The guys on deck are very good and have strapped down heaps of bikes before. Although I did stand there and hold the bike while he hooked it all up [roll] ;D

Just make sure you get the ones with the convex mirror. Gives you a wide view.

Hi Heather,

I also had standard mirrors when I was last on the ferry and hadn't thought about this. As you already know from other replies the ferry uses straps that go over the ends of the bars. My last experience with the ferry taught me that you have plenty of time to remove the bar ends while waiting to get on.

Can I ask why you have found the rizo mirrors useless?  Just that it is hard to set them up to get good vision behind, or vibration, or shape, or....
