Title: Best method for cleaning off thread locker?
Post by: tonkoshala on August 19, 2009, 12:41:19 PM
Several of my bolts are white and the others are full of gunk. I am sure the threads on the bike are in the same condition. What are some ways you guys clear all the old stuff off?

wire brush for the large ones, and a pick + compressed air for the smaller ones.

For the interior - a gently turned tap should break up the gunk - then you'd need to blow it out

I use carb cleaner.  Loctite used to make their own thread cleaner, but they no longer do.  A wire wheel is fine for steel fasteners, real bad for aluminum fasteners and will remove the cadmium coating from cadmium coated fasteners.

depends on teh type of thread locker.

usually a tap is best.  wire wheel works fine, but it can remove cadmium plating which ducati uses on stock bolts.
