The truly mean Gumpert Apollo Sport has powered its way to a Nürburgring lap time of 7:11.57, simultaneously setting the fastest lap for a production road-legal car and embarrassing the competition.
This number is an eleven-second improvement over the the Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR and Corvette ZR1 times, and a full 15 seconds over the Nissan GT-R VSpec time.
This feat was accomplished with the help of the Gumpert's 700 HP Audi turbo V8 and one skilled driver (26-year-old Florian Gruber) last week. The Apollo Sport hasn't officially been released, but with a lap time like this and a top speed of 224 MPH we imagine they won't have a hard time finding buyers. (Hat tip to YellowDucati for the tip!)

What's the price of that "production" car? :D
Neato. [thumbsup]
(Also: That's re-goddamn-diculously fast.)
Just found it. Over $400K.

that is the most composed record-setting lap of the 'schleife i've ever seen. wow. [thumbsup]
I think it was Jackie Stewart that said "smooth is fast"... this guy is freaking smooth as glass. wow, wish i could drive like that. I would bet he could have made any car faster on that track.
Anyone know if the Bugatti Veyron has run that course ? The Bugatti is suppose to have a top speed in the 240 mph range.
Dolph :)

Damn...............................................that video about wears me out , but what a rush !
I'd love to be able to take the " R " out on the " North Ring ."
Some days of the week either the North or the South Ring is open to the public for something like 20 EUROS per lap.

The driver must have not known the track as well as Florian !
The Veyron looks like a test mule. Plus they probably didn't want to take the chance of wadding it up at a $1,000,000 plus a pop.

Not so sure. The Veyron is one mightily powerful car, but it also weighs a ton when compared to something like the Gumpert. I would imagine that put the same driver in both cars, and the Gumpert would still come out ahead.

+1 to the above. remember, more horsepower lets you go faster in a straight line, but being lighter lets you go faster everywhere.
that was a really cool vid. That guy almost looks like he is just driving on a sunday afternoon in the countryside.
As Billy D. Williams would say..."Smooth everytime"!!!
Given that pure power is only truly an asset in the final long up hill straight just before the 4 corners leading into the start finish, I'd definitely rather have the Gumpert. Although, too light on the North Loop can be bad as well. Some of the bumps will just throw you off the track if your not careful. The active elements of the Veyron's areo package also given it a certain amount of an advantage.
what's odd here is that there is almost non-existent tire "howl" on the gumpert. even under extreme load. it could be the perfect combo of weight vs tire grip but me thinks they are using non-DOT tires (slicks or cut-slicks). and we know that production cars don't come with slicks. absolutely awesome tho. [thumbsup]
You guys are forgetting that even though the Gumpert is a production car it still has all the characteristics of a race car. It has front and rear adjustable wings, which make it glue to the track during high speed turns. It's suspension is fully adjustable, so if you have any body with an idea on how to tune can dial it in. The traction control is a nob that you can adjust from 0% to 100%. Its a supermarket race car and its ugly because its functional but there lies its beauty. It does surprise me that it beat the record.
Does anybody know the track record in a race car on the Ring?
Who says it's ugly? It's not the best looking car out there, but I would say it's far from ugly...
4:40- a "street car" that should come with its own chiropractor.
What I find interesting is that the video had a glitch at exactly the same point that Forza 2 does on my X-box.
Kinda freaky actually.

You can get 4 of these for the price of the Gumpert, or one and a 300K Condo. ;D

watching the first 30 sec of the vette video... either the Gumpert is being driving by a driver with ice in his veins or the car is SOOO much better than the vette.

I think it's the driver. The Gumpert driver uses everybit of roadway/curbing to clip those apexes whereas the zr1 driver seems to drive around the curbing.

Considering F1 teams spend $20 million (crude estimation) per second in development costs, $300k for 15 seconds sounds like a bargain.
