Title: Monster Top Speed Post by: He Man on August 23, 2009, 10:48:20 AM So most of us knows that the top speed of a ducati monster is ~130 for 2v naked. But what if you stuck a the motor into a 999. how fast would you reckon it go? 150?
Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: kingbaby on August 23, 2009, 11:02:44 AM We've got a guy here that says he has been over 170 (at a mile high) on his 848.....Riiiigght [roll]
But I woud like to think you could get at least 10+ with the aero. It's not that it can't do it now, but you feel like you have a wind noose around your neck in the proccess. Can we please not turn this into a "if you go that fast you should have a real one around your neck". I've ridden with some of you crazy f'rs. This is a good Q. Someone has to know someone with a bike like this with a full fairing. Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: herm on August 23, 2009, 11:44:08 AM i think there are a couple members who have fared monsters for track bikes.
pretty good bet one of them might have an idea. Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: Jester on August 23, 2009, 11:47:04 AM My 800 nails around 132ish indicated, but its hovering around 8k rpm if my memory recalls. I haven't really ragged it out lately. Even with better aero, I'm not sure it has a lot more to give even if its bouncing off the limiter.
Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: El Matador on August 23, 2009, 12:03:23 PM I maxed out my 695 at 132 indicated, with stock gearing, so probably more about 120. This was at sea-level.
I hit about 140 indicated on the S2R1K following Kingbaby on his 1098s. Take into account this was in the mountains of Colorado and with a 14t sprocket. I was bouncing off the rev limiter there for a bit. I think true speed was more around 127-ish Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: El Matador on August 23, 2009, 12:05:24 PM On the 996 OTOH, there is video somewhere of me doing 160 indicated over cattleguards [evil] Really more like 144 but still damn fun ;D
Just ask slag :) Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: truckinduc on August 23, 2009, 12:09:12 PM I have no idea on my monster. Guessing 140 hitting the limiter in 6th going down a very long and steep mountain. Like 2 mile straight at a 15% grade. m900 with stock gearing
Ive done 190, gps indicated, on a slightly naked, built r1. Dont think Ill ever do that again. Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: stopintime on August 23, 2009, 12:15:54 PM Tucking in behind my stock fairing with the taller Zero Gravity screen brings me from 130 to 138 (indicated)(14t)(800).
Full faired bike would add another 10-15, don't you think? Assuming somewhat different gearing. Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: He Man on August 23, 2009, 12:26:03 PM 10-15 is what i think. but i really have nothing to base it on. I forgot theres a few 2v full faired monsters on this forum.
ive never pegged my monster on rev limit at 6th gear. but ive seen the odo hit 130. thats with a full suit/full tuck @150lbs. So theres not much flying around for me. Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: Bick on August 23, 2009, 12:39:29 PM Isn't the top speed of the 620 somewhere around 140?
Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: kingbaby on August 23, 2009, 12:42:44 PM @150lbs. So theres not much flying around for me. I second that. I wish you could have been with ElMatador & DesmoLu for the Colorado leg. Saturday from Gateway back to Ouray was a blast. Beemergeek & Goduc took off on the group, I stayed in front for a while then could no longer hold back, aaaand off I go. After a few corners I see a headlight in my mirror ??? must be the bull fighter...BINGO. I back out for a bit, he locks on, we pace up to the other two (very skilled riders on water-cooled four valves). I'll let him tell the rest in his novel, but will say if anyone knows how to ring out a 2 valve (on a road that looks more like a video game), he does. [thumbsup] Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: roy-nexus-6 on August 23, 2009, 01:24:30 PM One guy on the forum did the Kessel Run in under 12 Parsecs - but that may have been with a wind assist. ;D

But what if you stuck a the motor into a 999. how fast would you reckon it go? 150? A Supersport would be close to that right? The 900SS topped out in the 135-145 range I think. Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: kingbaby on August 23, 2009, 02:35:24 PM i would of never kept up. that guy rides like a maniac. GREEEAAT And I thought he was riding supa' smooth. Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: The Architect on August 23, 2009, 02:50:05 PM Isn't the top speed of the 620 somewhere around 140? I opened this thread just to look for this post. [thumbsup] [laugh] Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: He Man on August 23, 2009, 03:04:52 PM it was because of the wookie did he grind up a wookie and feed him into the hyperdrive? Yea i'm kind of glad i stayed back, and skill level alone + an oil leak cannot keep up with that guy. the 900SS is pretty damn close... if that thing bucks out 140, then wtf is the threshold between naked top speed and faired top speed? Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: herm on August 23, 2009, 03:48:11 PM did he grind up a wookie and feed him into the hyperdrive? Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: Raux on August 24, 2009, 09:16:57 AM an engineer would better answer this, but i don't think at the 130-150 range fullfaired vs naked would be much different on Cd and Frontal area. once you get above that then Cd really comes into play.
so i think it's all about HP and gearing. ie taking an SS vs Monster with same HP and same gearing, they would top out the same. BUT get into a SBK vs a S4RS and i think you would see the top end difference even with similar gearing and HP Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: fasterblkduc on August 24, 2009, 09:52:04 AM From my racing experience...
The 620 in my avatar photo is heavily modified for track, (chassis, not motor). I have the weight down to 350lbs., and added a fairing. It tops out at approx. 120mph. I race against other Monsters, some with fairings and some without. The fairing does make a difference, but not much to top speed. Drafting is more important to top speed than anything when racing and discussing aerodynamics. I have guys that can draft me down the straights with naked Monsters but if we are side by side, I can motor them. It is more stable and feels a heckuva lot better to ride with a fairing but from my experience, it only gains you approx. 5 mph. or less. If you are racing, that 5mph. is like a much appreciated gift but if you aren't racing, it doesn't matter. A track modified 900SS is good for approx. 140mph. (stock motor) Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: RetroSBK on August 24, 2009, 11:02:04 AM From my own personal experience, but understand that I am as wide as a sheet of plywood, so pretty much anyone else is faster!
696 - 132 indicated. GPS shows 58mph at 60 on this bike. M1100 - 154 indicated. GPS variation was 57 at 60. My friend Fabio had this bike showing over 160, but in a draft. Streetfighter - 162 indicated. Afari Seri - 172 GPS, but DAMN that sucks ass! I think my neck got compressed an inch 1198S - 182 GPS For what its worth, there you go Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: kingbaby on August 24, 2009, 02:52:20 PM I love the neck compression statement.
We have a guy in town that claims 170+ on his 848. As Dr. Evil would say Riiiiggghht. And you hear people say its all the same over 150. ??? I am happy to say that at high 160's on my 1098s I am not very happy. Shit starts lookin' WEIRD on an open road in the desert ( picture a Jim Morrison dream). Beemergeek walked me in Colorado @ DITR on his make the beast with two backsin' beemer (I was at around 155), and BAM off he went. Said he was mid to high 170's. My GPS agreed. Greg, your bike is still ugly :P (http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd164/dustykitska/446.jpg) Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: ducpainter on August 24, 2009, 03:09:33 PM I love the neck compression statement. It had more, but I ran out of road. I'm guessing I could have hit 145...
Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: cyrus buelton on August 25, 2009, 05:23:09 AM I was cruising at 115-120 indicated on my 2004 S4r last June on I-70.
I got a speeding ticket for 98 in a 65. I had my 99 750 with FCR's up to 115 indicated and decided that was fast enough. I dont know if it had any left or not, no tach on it. Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: killerniceguy on August 25, 2009, 06:38:24 AM My S2R800 track bike with a 14t front sprocket with some weight removed but with my fat ass on it, power commander, k and n, clipons, stock internals will only do an indicated 210kph (131mph) before I run out of horse power down the front straight (almost a mile long). The bike will not red line in 6th gear, just not enough power.
Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: cyrus buelton on August 25, 2009, 11:14:43 AM My S2R800 track bike with a 14t front sprocket with some weight removed but with my fat ass on it, power commander, k and n, clipons, stock internals will only do an indicated 210kph (131mph) before I run out of horse power down the front straight (almost a mile long). Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: Spidey on August 25, 2009, 11:21:02 AM wouldn't your top end be better with a 15T instead of a 14t? If he's not redlining in 6th, probably not. It sounds like his top end is drag limited, not rev limited. There's a chance it'll give him more top speed in 5th, but whether that'll give him a higher maximum top speed depends on where 5th tops out. Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: amcloud on August 25, 2009, 11:21:11 AM wouldn't your top end be better with a 15T instead of a 14t? Not if he ran out of power before it redlined. If he was bouncing off the rev-limiter with a 14t, he would be able to go faster with a 15t. Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: kingbaby on August 25, 2009, 11:36:51 AM Spidey is correct (based on my knowledge...or lack of).
I do understand this is a thread about top speed, so, WHO here has been to Bonneville on there monster? I know it is not the best place to go find out top speed unless you have a thousand +HP & SS or aluminium wheels, but would be fun to hear your stories. I broke the 140 mark (my..and all 1098s will do that in 5th gear) on a bike there & had nervous shakes for over an hour (Greatest day of my life...on a bike [evil]) Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: El Matador on August 25, 2009, 01:23:59 PM IIRC speeddog did the whole bonnie scene for a while. He is the man to ask... Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: killerniceguy on August 25, 2009, 01:52:44 PM Drag is a big factor at this speed. I might have been able to go a bit faster with unlimited space but for all practical purposes my speed did not increase past the 210 indicated. The guys on liter bike at the track can reach well over 300kph before braking. KNG If he's not redlining in 6th, probably not. It sounds like his top end is drag limited, not rev limited. There's a chance it'll give him more top speed in 5th, but whether that'll give him a higher maximum top speed depends on where 5th tops out. Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: WhiteStripe on August 26, 2009, 05:16:48 AM Can't help, I hit 95 the other day on my S2R and nearly wet myself...
I am new to street riding and cannot imagine the wind at 135+ Title: Re: Monster Top Speed Post by: vw151 on August 26, 2009, 10:12:24 AM If I'm understanding this right then the question is. What is the top speed of a 2V ducati if it has fairings. Check the paul smart out or the 1000DS supersport. Those should be your fastest models with fairings and 2V. I'm thinking 150mph is doable with fairings. My s2r1000 has 14T and I get between 135 and 140 indicated on the back straight at mid-oh. My rev limiter has been bumped up to 9100 but I don't hit it. Not sure if it would pull all the way to it with enough room. After 135 indicated it's not accelerating too fast anymore. Making a wicked noise though with the full arrow race exaust and open air box though.
