Title: Crawford County Fair week
Post by: Monsterlover on August 23, 2009, 06:01:45 PM
I just moved down here and got married.

Every year the fair shows up, but I've never been there.

Until now  8)

I

LOVE

IT!!

Im not a city boy, but not a country boy either.  Lived a little of both and grew up in the middle.  Country is my preference, but I haven't seen too many farm animals up close before.

They're pretty cool.

These are some crappy iPhone shots, but they get the point across.

2400 pound draft horse.  This thing's head is the same size as my torso.

Im 6'4, 205lb and I felt small standing near this horse.  It takes a lot to make me feel like that.  I can't describe how gentile he was, but it was apparent there was some serious power lurking in there.  If he was pissed, i bet he'd be almost unstoppable.

A big pig!

And little pigs!!

We know what that means. . .

[bacon] [bacon] [bacon] [bacon]

Everytime we walked by a stall with pigs in it I'd look at my wife and say "Nom!"  and got the  [roll] each time  [laugh]

Where sweaters come from->  unhappy sheep

Again I felt small as this things sack was the size of a cantaloupe.

And afterwords they get sweaters to keep warm.  Hows that for irony?

Klan sheep

[laugh]

Last, but not least, Mrs ML entered a shawl that she knit to wear for our wedding.  Not only did she take first in her class, they named her Grand Champion.

I understand this to mean she owned everyone.   [clap] [clap]   ;D

I guess I'm a step closer to being a redneck  ;D

This is good, it'll help me blend in at the tractor pull this friday ;D  The heavy hitters are in town for this I guess.  Super crazy turbo diesel tractors, semis and god knows what else 8)  I can't wait.

As a man, I am drawn strongly to smoke, fire and horsepower.  Pics to come if they come out well.

I saw a glimpse of one the other night.

John Deere on roids.

Grey diesel smoke at idle. . .

he rev's it in time, bouncing the tach needle up and down.  Little smoke rings shoot up in the air.

The idle sound reminds me of a blown alcohol car at idle.

He takes the slack out of the hitch and hits it.

Gray smoke turns to a death black column screaming out of the single stack.  All I can here is an enormous turbocharger doing it's thing.

These guy are doing their part to close the hole in the o-zone layer with diesel smoke one pull at a time [laugh]

That's my old stomping ground. Funny the things you'll see there. I have had a craving for funnel cakes lately. Damn I miss funnel cakes.

Er - are you 900 rider on PennDesmo?

Live floor = the weight moves?  Yes.

MD- yes, I'm 900rider on penndesmo. I don't post there much at all though.

Funnel cakes are a little too dense for me. But tonight I tried a doughboy which fried dough brushed with butter and covered in cinnimon.

It was pretty good ;D

That's funny - the only reason I know about the fair is when we were at that place in Titusville they had a bunch of posters for the fair.

Ah, county fairs...

I was back in my home town for a bit, and went to part of ours.

Demolition derby? Check. Antique tractor pull? Check.

Fun, hick times.

Ours is next month. We try to go every year. Even tho I've lived in a city for 20+ years, I still love the fair. Brings back soooo many memories.

I was at the Montgomery Co. Fair a few years back (in the Washington DC suburbs) and was enjoying all the things I love about county & state fairs -- livestock barns (love 'em all, but for some reason I look forward to the rabbit barn the most), greasy food, a seedy midway, fast-talking pitchmen selling miracle products, demolition derbies, tractor pulls, all of it. Then I came across something I'd never seen before that was absolutely perfect in that once rural, now VERY suburban county: Contractor Games. I watched in rapt attention as equipment operators showed off their skills in backhoe/bucketloader dexterity competitions, timed forklift events, and my hands-down favorite: head-to-head slalom Bobcat races.

Try these taters on fer size!

Or perhaps 3400+lbs of Ribeyes?

Come on out to Iowa next year for the Fair ML...I will show you a great time and you will weep in your later years remembering the joyous food choices you had available to you (approximately 900 different food vendors).

this is about 10 miles from my house. Looks like I missed a good time. I saw signs for it all over the place.

Tractor pulls are fun, but if you get a chance to see draft horses compete, it'll blow your mind:

Duke & Dan Pull 9900lbs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXnGZYRphYo&feature=related#normal)

Five tons, no wheels -- that's some power right there!

And +1 to ZLTFUL on the Iowa State Fair -- I was working a job for a few years that had me traveling a lot in the upper Midwest, and I managed to make it to the Iowa, Minnesota & Wisconsin State Fairs at least once. Do it if you EVER get the chance.  [thumbsup]
