Title: My '06 S2R dies after startup....
Post by: peppemonster on August 24, 2009, 05:32:16 AM
It takes at least 3 times of pressing ignition button for the bike to keep running. Even after I get it running if I roll the throttle it feels like there is no power. The bike sputters before it gets going. I also get some back firing and popping noises coming from the Arrow slip ons I have on the bike. I was thinking maybe I bought some bad fuel? The bike only has 4,300 miles on it. I rode it a few hours yesterday and everything seemed okay. I am trying to burn the gas to see if that is the problem. I have an appointment next week for an oil change and to have my clutch plate and springs put on but I thought maybe I could get some insight here. I have searched but can't seem to find anyone else having the same issue. Thanks.

No what is a PCIII? Is that a power commander type thing?

Power Commander III = PCIII

he doesn't need a PC III to fix that does he? sounds a bit expensive to just fix a fueling condition.

maybe his cold start is bad? or O2 sensor? i'm sure the shop could diagnose better, but i doubt just slipons would create such a condition. at least from the experience on this forum.

I have had the slip on for well over 2,000 miles and never had any issues. When I explained the issue over the phone the service tech said it could possibly be an idle issue. I'm still thinking bad gas but who knows.

Well if you had slipons for that long, then it probably isnt a mapping issue. I only mentioned it because as soon as i put mine on, it bucked, died, and popped through the intake. Is the fast idle adjust correctly? These engines just wont run when cold if that lever isnt used or adjusted properly

I will look into the idle thing. I'm not very mechanically inclined but I'm sure it is something that I can find in the owners manual.

His bike doesn't have a fast idle lever.

If it's a throttle position sensor (TPS) issue, the bike will die when you try to idle it, like at a stop light.  I know because I had this issue.

it does sound like bad/dirty gas. let us know when you get it to the shop.

it doesn't have a cold start lever but it does have a cold start mechanism. i think it's a servo or something in the airbox.

Is the SR2 in question an 800 or a 1000?  If it is an 800 the bike has a fast idle lever and there is a CO idle trim that can be set with a scan tool.  If it is a 1000, no fast idle lever, idle speed, hot or cold, is controlled by a stepper motor and you cannot adjust CO.  The last thing I would do is put a Power Commander on it until I found the real problem and fixed that.  My first step would be to get a scan tool on it.  Within a few minutes you will know if the TPS and the temperature sensors are operating properly
