Title: Intermittent click & hitch in 1st gear
Post by: somegirl on August 24, 2009, 09:04:24 PM
Recently my bike (2007 M695) has developed an intermittent hitch.

It only seems to happen in first gear, and so far only when the bike is not fully warmed up.

It is always preceded by an audible click which seems weird.

Any ideas?  Thanks in advance. :)

How long since the last valve adjust?

The 'click' is most likely a small backfire into the intake.

Thanks Nick, I'm at 20,300 miles and the last valve adjust was at 15,000 which was a few months ago.

Obviously Dave has been riding your bike because you're not home enough to put 5K on in a few months,

I'd ask him. [laugh]

He's been too busy putting miles on my BMW while I've been riding the Duc everywhere when I'm home. :P

If I didn't travel that would have been 10K miles instead! ;D

BTW, I have also been having a lot of popping on deceleration, but this (the popping) has been going on considerably longer than the clicking hitch.

Possibly related?

i had a lot of hte things you were talking about, and it went away when i adjusted the valves. they were pretty out of spec though.

My whippet transport vehicle (328i).  I'm too leeetle for any bike besides an F650GS and even those are kind of a stretch.

Thanks, sounds like I should plan on an early valve adjust this time around.

By the time I get there and back it'll be time for the next valve adjust already! ;D

Throttle body synch could be a little off.

Also if the weather has been unusually hot, that could have something to do with it.
IE, the ECU is compensating for temperature, but not necessarily as good as is possible.

Unless the 'hitch' starts getting worse, I'd say see how it runs after the valve adjust.
Make sure your tech knows you've been having the issue when you take it in.

Thanks for the feedback!  My shop is excellent, I'll mention everything that's going on.

Now, just to figure out when and how to get it there after I get back home.  Seems like virtually every vehicle (except one bicycle) is having some sort of issue. :-\

Finally made it to the shop! They turned it around in one day for me. ;D

They found the main culprit was that the air bleed screws were too far out, so they reset them and adjusted the idle to compensate.

They also did my regular service / valve adjustment, changed my fork oil, replaced my front brake pads, changed my chain and sprockets (finally back to stock gearing), and fixed my intermittent oil temp sensor issue.

My bike feels great now.  I love Nichols! [thumbsup] [thumbsup] [thumbsup]

They always do excellent work, stand behind it, and have great rates.  It costs me more to change my own oil/filter than to have them do it.

I've used about a tank of gas since the repairs including quite a few goat trails and more open twisties but am now out of town for a few days.
