Title: Swapping wheel. Brake discs compatible?
Post by: Mash on August 25, 2009, 01:48:18 PM
I managed to dent my front rim, and I've got a replacement wheel ready to install.  The replacement already has discs mounted to it, and I'm wondering if these are compatible with what I've got now.  My bike is an '06 s2r1k.

Here's my current front disc, notice the stamping that reads MIN.TH. 3.6mm...

Here's the replacement I've got.  Notice the stamping says MIN.TH. 4.5mm...

Do you think I can just swap the tire and remount it?  Other than the color and the cutout pattern of the center hub, what's the difference between these discs?  I haven't measured the diameters.  Could they be different?

Your bike has 320mm front discs w/a 10mm offset.  The replacement wheel is off of an S2R800 which has 300mm discs w/0mm offset.  They are not compatible and you'll need to swap rotors.

thanks for the reply.  Are the bearing dimensions the same, or am I going to run into problems there?

I've been told here and by trusted wheel/brake vendors that the S2R 800 and S2R 1000 wheels are direct swaps, other than the rotors. I'm changing to S2R 1000 rotors (and Goldline 4 piston calipers) on my S2R - that's how I "know".

If you want new rotors - Yoyodyneti has bargain prices coming up on 320mm rotors for your bike - ~$140 each.

Be careful, those bolts are EZ to strip.

+1.  I *hate* those T40 Torx bit rotor bolts.  How do I remove them?  Put a small diameter punch in the center of the Torx hole.  Strike with a hammer.  Remove with care (most all of them come off after that).  REPLACE THE BOLTS.  They usually aren't good for another install/removal cycle.

If you don't have a punch to put in the center, you can strike the T40 socket, but it's not as ideal.

haha.

My technique is to heat it up with a torch to melt the lock tite. and use a T40 bit on it. Ideally with an impact gun.

If it does strip,as a last resort, i  drill a hole into it grind a flat slit into it heat it up again to melt the locktite and smack it with a hammer nad screw driver. works every time.

Well they could have something worse, phillips head screws are available in that size.  :P

I recommend spending good money on a Torx bit if you buy one.
I've had both cheap and expensive bits die, but the expensive ones hold up better on the average.

well, I got all the screws out except 2.  They're close to stripping, but not completely stripped... yet.  Going to Sears later to get an impact hammer.  If that doesn't work, then it's time to dremel in a slot and use a flathead.

Where can I get replacement screws?

Rotor bolts are M8x1.25.

I guess the newer bikes use a torx. Mine uses a low head allen.
