Title: how do you get practice sliding? Post by: KnightofNi on August 28, 2009, 02:47:18 PM umm, you fall down. [bang]
the good news is the bags acted kind of like frame sliders. (yes, i was on the triumph) [thumbsup] what had happened was... it had been drizzly all day, oil patches were all over the road on the way home. going through a turn that i know is slippery so i slowed way down. one thing i am very afraid of is high traffic roads during a light rain. the oil just sits there and doens't wash off. i mist have hit an oil patch or something because suddenly my rear wheel was spinning. i let off the gas and it just kept sliding. i straightened up and tried to bring it in line, but the front slipped and i was going sideways. i gave it a touch of gas to get it in line and moving in a direction other than sideways. i'm fairly certain that would work on the XR, but it didn't work on the sprint. :P the front went and i fell off. my left ass cheek is going to be sore, but i'm fine. just pissed off. though the ladies that came running out of the house at the exit of the curve, who's curb i happened to come to a rest on, offered to take me out and get me drunk. [thumbsup] the downside to that is i am fairly certain they would have expected something in return. i'm not ramases so 50 yr olds didn't do it for me ;D now for the damage pics. (http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff167/kngtofni/DSC_1477.jpg) something seems to be missing here..... Title: Re: how do you get practice sliding? Post by: Mr Earl on August 28, 2009, 04:50:00 PM Hey, 50 year-olds are young - to some of us [bang]
Glad your health is not amongst the casualties. And, as far as the damage - I can't believe I get to say this first - that'll buff right out. Title: Re: how do you get practice sliding? Post by: DoubleEagle on August 28, 2009, 04:53:51 PM Sorry man to hear about the slide / crash.
I was riding one day and came to a stretch of country road where a rain storm had just past. The road was wet and slippery as riding on a gravel road. I really had to slow way down until I got back on dry pavement. I don't ride if there is rain in the forecast but this was a unexpected pop up storm. Glad your spill wasn't worse. Dolph :) Title: Re: how do you get practice sliding? Dolph :) the really sad part is i ride down that road every day on my way home from work. i have ridden down in in snow, sleet, freezing rain, everything. it's always a slippery corner, today it just got the better of me. that's ok, the ego is being mended by booze [thumbsup] Title: Re: how do you get practice sliding? However, years ago I read Keith Code's "Twist of the Wrist" and he does cover HOW to act in a fall. Unfortunately I've had a few occasions to practice what I read. Fortunately I HAD read it, and it help a great deal. In short (from memory): 1) Gear up. 2) When sliding, it's best to be on your back and as spread out as possible [EDIT: Oh, and relax; really, try to relax]. 3) When you've stopped sliding, count to 10 before getting up because you're probably still sliding about 10 mph (the first time I tried this I forgot to count to 10 and WAS still sliding about 10 mph; ripped my gloves off when I put my hands down to get up). Of course the best thing is to NOT hit anything other than the pavement. Unfortunately that's not always in our power during these moments. Obviously that's easier said than done, and far easier to do at the track. Glad you're okay, save the sore whatever. Title: Re: how do you get practice sliding? Post by: swampduc on August 31, 2009, 04:14:42 PM Glad you're mostly ok, man, but a BRI on top of the crash? Dude, stay away, I don't need your luck ;D
