Title: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: onaboat on May 22, 2008, 03:45:31 PM sup folks, i installed a 14T sprocket and re-tensioned the chain. after a ride i took off my sprocket cover and the chain and sprocket is comin off the shaft :o!!! what could have caused this to happen? chain too tight maybe?
your help will be appreciated greatly, thanks Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: Slide Panda on May 22, 2008, 04:08:03 PM You should have some sort of sprocket retainer plate. On my 900 and 05 620 it was a small metal plate that was cut so that when in plate properly the teeth of the plates matched the raise sections of the shaft splines. That plate was secured to the sprocket via two screws.
You should have had to remove something like this to get your stock sprocket off - what became of it? My 1st thought it that plate's gone missing for one reason or another. Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: ScottRNelson on May 22, 2008, 04:19:14 PM You haven't told us what year of Monster you have, or even if it is a Monster. I'm also assuming that it is a Ducati with the clip that holds the sprocket in place using two small screws.
I've had two different failures on my ST2 with that. In on case, one of the two little bolts broke, then the clip broke, allowing the sprocket to slide around on the shaft. In the other case, the replacement clip somehow wore all of its teeth to the point that the sprocket was able to slide inwards on the shaft. I need to regularly check that clip now to make sure that it doesn't break or wear out again. So are either of these things what happened to your bike? Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: onaboat on May 22, 2008, 06:30:27 PM sorry its an 08 Monster 695 and i did put the little retainer plate back on. the chain is actually sliding outward away from the engine [bang]. could it be that the tension is too tight?
Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: ScottRNelson on May 22, 2008, 06:54:13 PM Maybe you could take a digital photo of the problem, because I can't figure out what is actually wrong from the description.
Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: He Man on May 22, 2008, 09:14:14 PM did you adjust the eccentric?
Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: Speeddog on May 22, 2008, 09:31:44 PM did you adjust the eccentric? '08 M695 doesn't have one. Perhaps you didn't get the retainer plate engaged in the groove on the output shaft? Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: onaboat on May 23, 2008, 12:28:48 AM i think it might be slipping out because i didn't tension it evenly? i re-tensioned the change again and took it for a ride its still slipping but not nearly as far. i'll try to take a pic of it after i ride tomorrow, i tapped it even already.
thanks Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: ducpainter on May 23, 2008, 04:18:09 AM '08 M695 doesn't have one. Is it possible to get the screws in if that's the case?Perhaps you didn't get the retainer plate engaged in the groove on the output shaft? Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: the_Journeyman on May 23, 2008, 05:05:11 AM No, the screws only line up once the retainer is properly placed. Unless the rear wheel alignment is WAY off, I'm at a loss. Unless the retainer looks like mine. Mine was really worn, so if it was worn enough, the teeth on the retainer could have snapped off and are no longer holding the counter shaft sprocket in place~
JM Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: ducpainter on May 23, 2008, 06:02:13 AM It's an '08...
My 96 still has the original retainer. Something is fishy here. Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: Qfactor on May 23, 2008, 06:37:46 AM sounds like he put the retainer ring against the output shaft, but not engaged in the groove.
Q Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: Speeddog on May 23, 2008, 08:03:46 AM sounds like he put the retainer ring against the output shaft, but not engaged in the groove. Q That's what I was trying to say. Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: onaboat on May 23, 2008, 04:22:45 PM sorry but what do you mean by "engaged"?
Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: ducpainter on May 23, 2008, 04:27:23 PM sorry but what do you mean by "engaged"? Take the retaining ring off and slide the sprocket towards the motor. You'll see a groove in the shaft. Look at the retainer...it should have teeth to match the shaft. Slide the retaining ring back on so it lines up with the groove, and turn it slightly to line up the screw holes and install the screws. [bang] did i install it inside out too?
(http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j13/biggreenauto/DSC01251.jpg) and here i had to take the plastic piece off because it was rubbing against it Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: printman on May 23, 2008, 04:59:35 PM turn the sprocket over so the teeth side is on the outside. It should line up then.
nice rivet job on the link [thumbsup] Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: onaboat on May 23, 2008, 05:14:18 PM actually i just checked my stock sprocket and it looks like the sprocket is suppose to be on with the teeth in, or maybe not i dunno but the stock sprocket has the sprocket retainer in-print on the side i installed it on. sorry i don't know if that even makes sense
Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: Speeddog on May 23, 2008, 05:16:41 PM actually i just checked my stock sprocket and it looks like the sprocket is suppose to be on with the teeth in, or maybe not i dunno but the stock sprocket has the sprocket retainer in-print on the side i installed it on. sorry i don't know if that even makes sense You're correct, teeth toward the inside for a 695. The pic I posted is of a 900 motor, sprocket is teeth out on those because of the wider rear rim on 900s. Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: onaboat on May 23, 2008, 05:20:44 PM ok kool, thanks a lot guys, yall may have saved me a lot of headache and my bike [beer]
Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: onaboat on May 23, 2008, 05:24:17 PM maybe the mods can sticky this as how NOT to install a new sprocket.... i feel like such a dork
Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: Speeddog on May 23, 2008, 06:44:19 PM Don't worry, everybody makes errors.
Best part is, you'll always get it right from here on. ;) Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: printman on May 24, 2008, 04:37:49 AM You're correct, teeth toward the inside for a 695. Learned something new today [thumbsup] Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: BastrdHK on May 24, 2008, 09:51:30 AM ohhh DUHH :o (http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j13/biggreenauto/DSC01251.jpg) and here i had to take the plastic piece off because it was rubbing against it Put your chain guides/guards back on....it is supposed to rub against them. Unless you prefer your chain taking bites out of your nice new swing arm. Since the chain is made out of very strong, dense steel it will eat everything else in its way. Unfortunately, my swing arm has the scars to prove it. 8) Title: Re: HELP chain is slipping out!!! eeeek Post by: DuciD03 on May 24, 2008, 10:14:08 AM .... and heres an example of when you need to clean and lube your chain ... ;) (sorry i couldn't resist) Cheers D

[cheeky] That's not dirt incased in oil. That's black gold! [roll] That's what holds some peoples bikes together and keeps them running. ;D |
