Title: build your own streetfighter Post by: M900 on August 31, 2009, 05:59:33 PM I was looking at the new Streetfighters and it occured to me that if I can ditch most of the fairings, I'd be just as happy with an older (03 or so) 749 and save almost 10K. The problem is I hate faired bikes, and though I can live with the fairing assembly around the headlights, I know I'd want to ditch everything else. I can't find pics of tehbike without the fairings though which leads to this thread.
Has anyone one anything similar? Any issues? Is there any place where the battery (which I assume is under the fairing somewhere) can be hidden? Any pics of the bike sans plastic? Nice bike, but I actually prefer the stock Duc nose fairing and tank... Also, the hefty price tag would be a deal breaker. This bike is for sale in Germany right now. I promised the wife a bike we could ride together so it's not on my shopping list [bang] [bow_down] (http://pic.motoscout24.de/images/4/6/3/3200364_3.jpg) (http://pic.motoscout24.de/images/4/6/3/3200364_1.jpg) (http://pic.motoscout24.de/images/4/6/3/3200364_2.jpg) Title: Re: build your own streetfighter Post by: b. on August 31, 2009, 09:10:35 PM (http://www.motowheels.com/italian/images/lg55154620.jpg)
And here's another thread about someone modifying their 999R: http://www.ducati848.net/forums/showthread.php?t=7440 (http://www.ducati848.net/forums/showthread.php?t=7440) ...his solution to the battery issue was to cloak it in CF. Title: Re: build your own streetfighter Post by: M900 on August 31, 2009, 09:39:39 PM Thanks. The last two are exactly what I'm thinking about.. I was worried about the battery -- maybe a cutting the bottom fairing down into a chin fairing would hide the battery in a more stylish way... I'm prob going to go with heli bars rather than going through the trouble of swapping triple tree tops to mount handlebars though...
Now I'm def on the lookout for a good used 749/748... Title: Re: build your own streetfighter Post by: al@sktc on August 31, 2009, 10:20:22 PM i know someone that is selling a 749 with under 5k for $4,000......the fairings are gone but, the rest of the bike is perfect. i am in north east ohio btw.

Do you agree that there's absolutely no place to hide the battery? Would a smaller battery work somewhere in the subframe under the seat, maybe where the passenger pillion goes (of course with some minor 'surgery')? (http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e375/cbartlett419/RightSide.jpg) this is a 916 after prom night built by a member that looks like a Monster with the new "sport" tanks from CA Cycleworks... Title: Re: build your own streetfighter Post by: Triple J on September 01, 2009, 06:18:33 AM Buy a smaller battery...like a Speedcell or Odyssey. Then put it in the airbox, or in a custom box fitted under the tail...or something like that. You can find a place.
Click the link in my sig. Not exactly the same, but I turned my Multi into a streetfighter. I had the same issue with the battery/ecu relocation. Title: Re: build your own streetfighter Post by: ICON on September 01, 2009, 07:34:10 AM Here's my street fighter. ;)

What I'm going to do and have not gone around to doing it, is updating the Chopper flickr page with info on the bike. I would post up here but don't want to thread jack more than I already have or upset anyone being it is a Monster forum. Or I could post up a new Thread on the General Monster Forum entitled: "Other project bikes." This bike is really a "Bobber" not a "Chopper" by the way.
Just a little on the bike. She has a Kraft-tech Frame= Rake:34", Up: 0", BackBone: 2" with 1-3/8" Tubing. I am running a 250 Dunlop rear on a 18x8.5 rear wheel. Front is a 21" wheel. I have 32" drag bars with 1" risers. I have a 3.3 extended KING/peanut 95-03 GAS TANK HARLEY SPORTSTER. The motor is a Polished Ultima 113 Motor. About 130hp, 1,833cc with a Ultima Polished LSD 6-speed tranny. The rest I'll post up somewhere. Thanks again for your kind words. I really appreciate it. Right now, the local dealer has a '99 996 for 6K and it has just over 6K miles on it. Oven with 1K in fab work for the battery/electronics and some heli bars (which is generous as hell, IMO), that's just 7K for a real (non-corporate) streetfighter. I need to fx my CB so I can sell it and free up my garage for another Ducati! It's nice having something totally unique, that looks exactly like you want it to. I'm into mine for about $4K or so. The biggest single portion of that is in the bodywork and paint though. I opted for a professional since I have zero fiberglass/paint experience. However, I did save a lot of money on the custom brackets and CNC work, since it was done by a friend and his buddy. The 996 sounds cool. They're really fun projects. I'd love to do it again. Title: Re: build your own streetfighter Post by: M900 on September 03, 2009, 01:35:31 PM Agreed. I'm probably just peeling off the bodywork on a Superbike and hiding teh battery somewhere -- all of which I can do myself so that's a lot of $$ saved. Funny thing is my wife is skeptical -- she thinks by the time I'm done, I would have spent too much on an older bike and it'll be comparable to just getting a new Streetfighter, and I told her that spending more on a real streetfigher is worth it and she goes; "but why would you want an older bike instead of a new one???" she just doesn't get it... :'( btw, thanks for the thread on your build -- the info will come in handy! Sure. After everything is removed, you'll look at the unused frame tabs and decide you hate them. Next thing you know you'll have a lonely engine sitting there, and you'll be prepping the frame for powder! [laugh] I lucked out with my wife. When I told her my plan she just told me don't cheap out...do it right.
