Wait a second...

Any weirdo, whack-job, crack-addicted, disease-ridden, abusive, obnoxious, sorry-excuse-for-a-human-being that can procreate can do so over and over with impunity, but couples who have the money, intestinal fortitude, desire and wherewithall to endure that kind of infertility treatment in order to have a child get subjected to a criminal background check?  REALLY???

MAYBE, if you have to have a license to drive a car, you should have a license to procreate.  Perhaps EVERY person old enough to have/make a baby should go through a screening process.  If you're a loser, you get sterilized.

Oh, what's that?  I've gone too far???  Huh.  Then so has the government.

I'm just sayin'...

(...steps off soap box...)

Yes, a psychological counselling session is something we had to do here as part of the process and I have no objection to that.

I appreciate the tragic irony of this law as much as the next person, but I just want to point out that the Aussies have socialized health care.  The article presents their rationale:
"..this is government funds that are being used to help these people get pregnant and therefore they require extra checking," he said."

My sister has adopted two kids and has had enough background checks to qualify to be director of the NSA.  The same questions apply: why should her parenting ability need to be sanctified by the state, etc?  To her, it is simply the cost of doing baby business.

Also, I don't think they are doing this to be prejudicial, but to prevent this headline from happening "Australian Government Funded Fertility Treatment for Pedophiles"

A good friend and his wife have been through serveral rounds of treatments, at a financial cost of tens of thousands per attempt (and incalculable emotional cost)  Just out of curiosity, I looked up the out-of-pocket expenses (http://www.monashivf.com/default.asp?action=article&ID=21664) for treatment in Australia.  Keep in mind these are Aussie dollars :)

IVF TREATMENT
Patient Out of Pocket Costs after Safety Net*

Stimulated Cycle
$904.80

Natural / Minimal Stimulated Cycle
$520.00

Frozen Embryo Transfer
$280.00

Artificial Insemination
$274.56

My objection is that those recources going in to doing criminal history checks on people doing IVF could be spent elsewhere. We are forever being told how underfunded the police and health system is.

If she gave more head, she wouldn't be in this predicament!

doesn't this seem to be backwards.....
Parents that have no business having children(without help from an MD) don't get checked/screened, but the folks that can't have children (without help) have to be screened? WTF. Now i understand that this issue is developed because of the gov't paying for this service, and honestly i don't have a problem with that, but they should be screening everyone.....psychological, ethical, job worthy, criminal....etc. or something along those lines. Because if the issue is the gov't money, the dullards having children that shouldn't just become more money the gov is spending....i don't see how people trying to have offspring to the point of seeing a doctor are the problem here.(and by here i mean there)
Octomom is the reason EVERYONE should be screened

just my opinion
