Title: Bikes electrical system having issues
Post by: Dents on September 08, 2009, 02:50:30 PM
I've been having some electrical issues lately that seem to be getting worse.  I don't think the two are related but who knows...I hope you do.

1st. After turning the key to the on position it takes a little bit of time before the head light and subsequent circuits come on.  This problem has slowly but recently more rapidly getting worse.  Lately it takes about 1 minute for the light to come on and the bike being able to start.  The electrical system seems to have no issue powering up the bike.

2nd. This started about two years ago.  I'll be driving on the highway and one of my cylinders stops firing.  It lasts about 5 to 10 secs and before it pops and starts to firing again.  It doesn't seem to matter if the bike is warm or not.  I have an aftermarket tach and it stops working once the cylinder stops firing.  The tach is connected to the right side coil.  I may see a little bit of the knitted wiring coming from the coil coming undone and maybe that needs to be replaced.  It is not consistant when this happens.  It may happen a couple times on a ride or not at all.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance

why don't you try taking it back to stock first. replace all the fuses. check all the grounds... then see if you have the problem. i'm no expert, but just logical that stock it's supposed to work.
then if it works... reconnect the tach... see if you get the problem again.

I'd check the main relay and its' connections for the light/start-up issue.

I'd check the connections and wiring at the ignitor boxes and coils for the tach and running issues.
