Title: Mirror dilemma
Post by: jonnyconcrete on September 09, 2009, 01:09:40 AM
Hi guys i have just suffered a oberon mirror shaking itself loose from the end bar of my monster 696
it was fully my own fault (no lock tight used on the end bar allen nut thread) the worst part was i watched it start to twizzle round and thought i could get home before it rattled out...doh [roll]

So im now looking at alternative mirrors for the bike, the main reason for this is mainly because all i could ever seem to see in my end bar mirrors (if im being honest) was shoulders and elbows.

So are there any mirrors that you guys/girls can recommend that look good , work as mirrors and are reasonably priced ?
Im just looking for honest "real rider" and not "sales guy" opinions

Cheers

crg is the answer, although they may not seem reasonably priced.

No info on the mirror, but I love your signature line gif...

I have CRG lane-splitters (these are the folding model, IF installed correctly. You would not believe the number I have seen installed in front of the bar! DOH!)

The view is great/clear but as with most bar-ends of this size (relatively small compared to regular mirrors) not large and in charge. Still, I would have no other mirror....  [thumbsup]

Third Eye bicycle bar end mirrors work well and are only $15 each.  Not as cool looking as anything made of machined aluminum.

CRG Hindsight LS mirrors. They are nicely built and when adjusted properly give you a nice view of the sides/blindspot. With that said, head checks are still important when changing lanes.

i had the same thing happen to an Oberon mirror of mine (i still look for it on the highway - but never seem to find it).
i switched (back) to CRG Hindsight Lanesplitters - way better view and much better made in my opinion.

Hate the Monstrack mirrors, one of them rattled apart in 6 months, neither the Retailer or Monstrack wanted to help me out with Warranty.
I even offered to pay freight, but they did not want to assist me, so they can get bent!

These little fleabay knock-offs of the crg's are what I use and work great for those who are not on a crg budget.

I went with Napoleons for my 696.  Got em from CA-Cycleworks for $28 each.  As long as you still have the stock steel handlebars, they'll work without any mods.  Good view all around.  Even with the right one adjusted to see more behind me than straight back, I don't see much of my arms/shoulders.

crgs are the best for visibility IMO

i dont like any mirrors besides crg and rizoma, currently have rizomas but cant see shit out of them!
the things we do in the name of 'style'!

The problem with the oberons, and indeed most barend mirrors... is the mounting system being made of metal..
metal on metal + ducati = rattling loose.

i installed oberon SF mirrors on my lady's gixxer, but instead of using the metal-on-metal mounting kit supplied with the mirrors, i used the expanding rubber mounting system that was already attached to her barend weights that were being removed. The rubber holds the mirror in place VERY securely, but also absorbs some vibration, helping combat the problem. also, since the rubber is smooth, and not digging into interior surface of the handlebar, you can give it a twist (with a little force) if you need to adjust on the fly, without having any problems...

basically it works like a bushing.

here's what the barend mounts look like:

I have rizoma's myself, the retros.  Decent view, but I still need to slightly shift my elbow occasionally.  It really depends on the angle.  I really dig the style though, so I take the elbow shift in stride.

I assume you are after a pic of an "incorrect" installation, yes? Alas I have none as I try to put the image out of my mind and camera!  [laugh]

But if you look at mine (installed correctly):

and then picture the mirror mount rotated forward where it puts the mirror in front of the bar/bar end (stopping it from folding back as it will hit the bar end), you will get the "picture".  ;D

I got the ebay ones and after a couple of days the screws that are behind the mirror started to come loose. The only problem is that the only way to access the screws to tighten is by taking the mirror off. It was kind of a pain to do but what I did was take the mirror off using dental floss, put gorilla glue on the threads of the screws behind it and then put the mirror back on with gorilla glue, it was previously held on with think sticky tape. Hasnt loosened since.

+1, I love napoleons, they look good, are inexpensive, rubber mounted and give a great vibration free view.

I had the Napoleons, still do in a box.  They are good mirrors, good build quality, reasonable price, and a very good view behind you.  The only thing I didn't like is that they are a little big.  I like the looks of smaller mirrors better.

CRG's are the best. I'e never had an issue with them rattling loose...and I've been using them for a lot of miles.

Cyclegear makes CRG knock-offs for $60 if you want something a bit cheaper.
