Is it a vespa, or one of the korean maxi scooters or aprilia-like performance scooters?
And, how well does it go with passenger? I'm thinking of getting one, something reasonably priced for short distance two-up rides.

My personal preference would be for the Vespa. I like the classic look [thumbsup]
Well according to some A-hole on an SV 600, the Ducati Monster.
I should of punched him in the nuts...
i had a spree. it was the best. i souped her up, 32 mph baby. i painted it blue with white stripes, pimp. wish i had thought to take a picture but i only had it for three years. no time.
Probably not the kind of scooter you're thinking of, but I just picked up one of these. Great for downhill, although it's illegal on all bay area trails, so I have to go early in the morning and sneak a ride. I've been kicked off of two mountain biking trails so far. Technically, it's a bi-cycle.

I'm waiting for my dog harnesses so I can do this. It'll cost me in dog food, but save on gas. I like toys ;D

had a Yamaha Vino125 for a couple years. They are a lot less expensive than Vespa/Piaggio, but still decent build quality and there is a dealer network.
I rode it some with wife on back, it would keep up with in town traffic, although acceleration was pretty weak. Riding solo it would go 55.

this one is my favourite

of course, it's only my favourite when my girlfriend is riding it... or me...
+1 on RUCKUS!! [evil]
One of our best sellers !

This one is pretty cool and in my favorite color, Matte Black:

im torn between a couple different bikes. i want a fun little toy to ride around town that is not fast enough to get me in too much trouble. i cant decide if i want to get a honda ruckus or a yamaha vino. both of them have highs and lows. the ruckus gets better mileage, and has a bigger aftermarket (that ive found so far) but the zuma is a two stroke, and it has disc brakes on the front stock. i cant decide.
Well, I'm a Vespa guy.
I'd consider a Stella very seriously, too.
I had a blast squidding it up on this little old thing.

I had one of these: An Aprilia SR50 Factory

Liquid-cooled, direct injected, disk brakes and it handled very well. I had it up to 95 km/h on the flats. A great scoot but you couldn't really use it on freeways. I wish I still had it for short trips around the neighbourhood.
My '63 Vespa 160GS. Lot's o' fun to ride, & will pull 2-up at better than 60mph ;D ;D ;D
Oh, & about 65 mpg [thumbsup]
Thanks a lot for all your comments. From what you guys wrote, I gather that a 150 cc should be enough for short distance rides with the wife in the backseat. (I really liked the aprillia btw)
That first reply (Piaggio MP3) is a nice concept, with the front 2 tires that lean into turns. Kinda like a smaller Can-Am spyder.

Italian all the way baby!!! VESPA!!! fun to ride, good for two up,great for city riding, sexy classic look. [thumbsup]
Whoever posted the Genuine Scooter Company, they're sold out of DucSea according to their website. I really like their Rattler Buck Ten. I will be looking at one of those upon my return.
sorry to thread jack here, but this seems like the place where someone can tell me how to find training wheels for my monster.
the " scooters, really?"ron [evil]

I can certainly see that you might need them, but I'm afraid you'll need them on a scooter, too. I don't think anyone here knows as much about training wheels as you do.
Old school all the way
1965 lambretta
there is nothing like blasting around with a two stroke that has an expansion chamber, clutch and shift with the left grip and pretty much zero brakes.
I am never more scared than riding my scoot.
Yes I love it. [moto]
Gilera Runner 125.
Good looking, quick for a 125 (86mph downhill on the Italian-so-not-very-accurate speedo!) and there are loads of bits around to pimp or poke it as much as you want.

Gilera Runner VXR200, 200cc 4 stroke. Have had one for about two years, top speed about 120kph ( 75mph) and about 25klms per litre (always full throttle!).

The guy at the dealership said it's "pretty stout for a 50cc"

living here, them "akira" scoots are pretty damn cool. I don't want one. But, they're cool. Pimp'd out to all hell too. Sat on one at the moto show. It's was like riding a barkalounger...
