Its the 8th anniversary of the September 11 attacks today. My heart goes out to anyone who may have lost a loved one during this horrible day.
+1
My Facebook status today:
...thinks the politicians, developers and whomever else is involved should get off their asses, stop the bullshit, and get those two Towers rebuilt again NOW as 8 years is way too long for that same hole in the ground to be there. To all that lost anyone and to all NYers, I certainly remember...
and a comment under it:
To all the emergency workers, whether FDNY, NYPD, EMT, everyone that helped those first couple of days, thanks for your sacrifice.
and another:
...and while I'm on my rant today, you make the beast with two backsers selling souvenirs to the idiot tourist that come in thinking it's a Disney attraction, you should all burn in Hell!
Never Forget

Never Forget
I never will and I have worn an American Flag lapel pin on my shirt everday since in their memory. [bow_down]

have you ever been to "the hole"?...I stayed in the Millenium Hilton right next to the site a few months ago( about 3 weeks after Sully's landing in the river as I was remarking at looking at his runway path and all while there) and was up on the 48th floor in my room overlooking it all, and I'll tell you, it is not a small thing to take on...it is freaking massive...from resupporting and restructuring the PATH train tunnels and all of the supports and utility and other stuff in there alone is a HUGE undertaking and they are getting structuring built above the ground level for sure in addition...but it is not a simple thing or an easy thing...hell, from the lead and asbestos abatement they are doing still on the (German?) bank building right next door that is still shrouded is a sign of some of the things they are are still ecologically dealing with.

"Have I ever been to the hole". I am a born and raised NYer. I walked home that day to the Bronx. I pass it with either the Duc or car regularly. I don't walk around there as the tourists and souvenir sellers piss me off to the extent of which you can't imagine.
It's not a simple thing, I agree, but we have three new sports stadiums done in two years each. Other skyscrapers go up at ridiculous rates. The State, City, developers, contractors and some of the families have all put monkey wrenches in the rebuilding process in one way or another. The amount of time that has progressed is an embarrasement.
I was sitting at my desk in downtown DC when one of my co-workers came in and told me to turn on the TV (I worked in media and usually had CNN on & muted through the day, but hadn't yet turned it on). Throughout the morning, rumors ran rampant about attacks all over the city -- rumors that took on a desperate reality as the pall of smoke grew over the Pentagon just across the river.
I remember riding my bicycle home through the gridlocked yet eerily quiet streets, National Guardsmen trying to keep traffic moving through the intersections. I remember shock, I remember fear - I remember fury and a raw hunger for blood vengeance. But I also remember people coming together to help one another like family, people who'd been total strangers mere hours before.
This day will haunt me forever. Never forget.
I now have an understanding about the pain that you see in people's eyes who were around in 1941.

You just gave me the chills. I wasn't anywhere near the attacks but my longtime girlfriend was on a plane at the time. All I knew was the plane made an emergency landing. I could not get hold of her for hours.
The place where we are installing a kitchen right now overlooks the Pentagon.......would have been the backstop if the plane missed. Surreal.
First I got a call from my sister working in mid town after the first plane just hit.
I saw everything else happen from a rooftop not too far away. It smelled like burning everything for the next few days in all of the boroughs. I can't forget.
The fact that it's still a pit is inexcusable. I can't say more without ranting or talking politics.
The empire state building went up in 18 months during a depression. It was (at that time) the tallest building in the world.
That was before OSHA....
Had friends and acquaintances in the towers. Never got word of their fate from some. :(
[sigh]

+1 >:(
7 WTC began building in 2002 and finished in 2006.
Perhaps their is a fear that if we build the Towers again some how they will be a target again by Al Qaeda ?
Just a thought.
Dolph........ :'(
I was in the Northern territory of AU on Sept 12th (date line). I never saw any of the footage/pictures until months later, so even now it's hard to believe any of it ever happened.
I was working as a mechanic for United on Sep 11. What happened still haunts me. A friend of mine was going to take a buddy pass of mine to fly to New york & back to S.F. in fact he was in the air when that all happened. Instead of using the buddy pass he got a confirmed seat on Jet blue instead. Watched the whole thing happen on TV from his seat. He had to spend 3 days at some airport in Iowa but at least he didn't go in the dirt like flight 91.
Speaking of delayed projects, the Stupid Bay bridge wont be finished for another 4 years. The earth quake happened in 89'. it's been like what 20 years now?
Bay Bridge Collapse #2, Great Quake of 89 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLuD7bzvOeA#normal)
And they are only this far along.
