Title: Ride To The Springs Post by: Kawboy on September 11, 2009, 10:53:48 PM Making a ride to the Springs to grace the Smelly Pirate Hookers lair . . . No. The Bonfy bordello . . . No wait! That's not right either. The Bonfy abode (There we go. Got to keep civil) before the white stuff starts flying. Dates: Sept 19 - 21 (or 20 - 21. Trying to stay flexible). Chime in if you want to participate. If you can't make the whole thing, make as much as you are able. Preliminary route: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Bernalillo,+NM&daddr=Nambe,+Santa+Fe,+New+Mexico+to:Truchas,+nm+to:Ranchos+de+Taos,+nm+to:Cimarron,+nm+to:Trinidad,+co+to:Walsenburg,+co+to:Westcliffe,+co+to:Penrose,+co+to:Colorado,+Springs,+co&geocode=%3BFQ_TIwIdW-yu-Q%3B%3B%3B%3B%3B%3B%3B%3B&hl=en&mra=mr&mrcr=7&sll=38.345964,-105.202332&sspn=1.02534,2.463684&ie=UTF8&ll=37.692514,-106.276245&spn=2.069012,4.927368&z=8 (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Bernalillo,+NM&daddr=Nambe,+Santa+Fe,+New+Mexico+to:Truchas,+nm+to:Ranchos+de+Taos,+nm+to:Cimarron,+nm+to:Trinidad,+co+to:Walsenburg,+co+to:Westcliffe,+co+to:Penrose,+co+to:Colorado,+Springs,+co&geocode=%3BFQ_TIwIdW-yu-Q%3B%3B%3B%3B%3B%3B%3B%3B&hl=en&mra=mr&mrcr=7&sll=38.345964,-105.202332&sspn=1.02534,2.463684&ie=UTF8&ll=37.692514,-106.276245&spn=2.069012,4.927368&z=8)
Route suggestions welcome. Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: dusty on September 12, 2009, 07:04:57 AM Oh how I wish I could accompany you. I have family coming INTO town next weekend, some of which I haven't seen in years. Sounds like an absolute blast though. Be safe and lay a big wet one on the SPH for me! :-*
Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: kingbaby on September 12, 2009, 08:15:00 AM lay a big wet one on the SPH for me! Did she just say that? As for the trip, you can probably figure where I'll be next weekend. Oh, lay one on El Pirata for me too. [evil] Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: bonfy on September 12, 2009, 09:11:31 AM Sorry you two can't make it, but I understand. My folks are coming out the first part of October so I am planning around that myself. Gotta gobble up that family time anytime you can get it. There'll be many more opportunities. Like I was telling Kawboy, keep it really loose and not like an epic journey because if these trips can be thrown together quick with no great hoopla, they will be more appealing and easier for everyone. If folks can get away for part or all of it, they are more than welcome. I'm posting it on the SoCO DOG board, too, so maybe some of them can ride partway with me to meet up with the northward-faring gangsta's on the way in or out.
P.S. I will be expecting delivery of the big wet ones from Dusty and KB from any and all coming this way. [clap] [laugh] Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: hunkypunk on September 12, 2009, 09:37:55 AM Got to keep civil.....before the white stuff starts flying. WHAAAAAAAAA?WHAAAAAAAAA? I will try to gather more SoCODOGS.... [moto] Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: bonfy on September 13, 2009, 06:13:23 PM I hope you can make it down, DDGM. We'll keep the board updated and you have my home number. I'll pm you my cell. >:( I don't want any crap from anybody about totin' a damned cell phone around now. Scottish threw me on his plan and it's his old phone. It probably won't last even as long as my stupid little trac phone (3 weeks) so don't go off like striped-assed apes celebrating my entry into the 21st or whatever century it is.
Whoa! Back on task here! KRJ, that would be awesome if you and any other DOGs could meet up with them on Saturday and entertain them for a bit. I have to work till midnight so they'll be letting themselves in and will probably be asleep by the time I get home. The next day we can ride, rest, watch football or old races (no big races that day that I'm aware of). Next day, more riding with the gang as they head out. Can't wait! Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: Kawboy on September 13, 2009, 09:20:36 PM I will try to catch You all in Westcliffe or Florence, maybe loop through Canon City for a break and refreshments at my place, then to Springs. We'll finialize the route when we find out who we'll meet up with, and where and when. Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: Kawboy on September 13, 2009, 09:40:39 PM Whoa! Back on task here! The SPH joins the modern world and gets a cell phone. And I thought I was impressed when my dad learned how to copy and paste something in Windows.
Wow. :-* Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: JJ on September 14, 2009, 05:56:23 AM I can give you a boost from Santa Fe upward...Are you leaving on 19th? I can only do Sat and Sun, But I'm good for some fun! [moto]
Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: Cloner on September 14, 2009, 06:20:13 AM BYOWS cuz I don't have any. ;D "Bring Your Own WubbaS"????? I'm just sayin'. As to the ride, I might be able to join you guys up to, say, Taos if you're leaving Saturday morning. I can't dedicate the whole weekend to it, though. I'm supposed to help at a corner station at the SMRI races this weekend. Just for my reference, what's the deal with NM 126 from Cuba back over to NM 4? Has anybody ridden that stretch? Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: Kawboy on September 14, 2009, 06:23:17 AM Lucifer just crapped himself as he watched his kingdom of hell freezing over.... I'm supposed to help at a corner station at the SMRI races this weekend. Just for my reference, what's the deal with NM 126 from Cuba back over to NM 4? Has anybody ridden that stretch? The plan is to leave fairly early (8 . . . ish) on Saturday and blast up the high road to Taos. Come along as far as you want. On route 126, it's paved only part way. The part from Fenton Lake to Cuba was recently paved several miles farther. I'm not sure how long the dirt section is now. I don't mind riding the dirt. It just get the bike so dirty, though. Others don't want anything to do with dirt. Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: Kawboy on September 14, 2009, 06:36:08 AM I can give you a boost from Santa Fe upward...Are you leaving on 19th? Will be there at 8:00am Sat morning! Are you leaving Santa Fe at 8 or ABQ? Awesome! [moto]
I have done the whole stretch on rt126 off Jemez springs (Rt 4) up to Cuba on my old 999...The dirt section was very painful and long, but we (999 and I) managed it...Lot of dirt on the bike and the chain seemed dirt solid and I lost a license plate...But the paved road to Cuba after the dirst stretch is an awesome treat! Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: kingbaby on September 14, 2009, 07:12:38 AM Hey! I'm working the corner tomorrow myself! I'm hoping for a couple of get-offs, at least. I'm going to be in some different leathers so don't look for my usual get-up. See me on South Nevada! It has been very painful and I will thank you all to please look away as I unravel the mysteries of this new technology. I feel like the natives with the Pepsi bottle in "The Gods Must be Crazy". Dusty has already received some of my partially constructed texts which send themselves arbitrarily. I do have a tiny brain when it comes to this activity. We don't get any bars on WHORE ISLAND! Man, I wish I could ride down to Taos to meet up with Cloner and any others that can only go that far. JJ, I'm so glad you are coming up! I was hoping your schedule would allow you to get away. I thought we could meet up at the Starbucks on 550 just off I-25 at around 8:15 and then head up to Santa Fe and pick up JJ. We know it happened. 8) Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: ahghi on September 18, 2009, 12:49:25 PM I am a virgin to these mountains and terrain. I think it is the time of day to partake AND the code that cops use for related activites in progress. Still looking in my photobucket, but they may still on my SD card. I'm at work so may have to do it when I get in tonight. We'll see. Damned work keeps interfering with my DMF perusing.

I don't have the Senor's pix on photobucket yet, but will find them tomorrow. And while I was meandering through my various albums looking for them, I came across these from last year. Since I missed Zozobra this year I will derby these and relive the memories! Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: bonfy on September 19, 2009, 02:00:24 PM Does that mean you are coming all the way?? Yea!!!! I have a tire in my garage that has some meat left on it, if it fits, it's yours! [thumbsup] Hope you got ahold of KRJ. If you get to my house early, make yourself at home. I texted Kawboy about where to find the key to the garage.
Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: bonfy on September 20, 2009, 03:43:14 PM Wow! The first day of riding is complete, at least for Kawboy and I. Just rolled in half an hour ago. Rode with JJ, KRJ and Shannon through Salida where those two peeled off and headed back. Kawboy and I rode on with JJ to Alamosa. We peeled off at that point back to the Springs via La Veta Pass. We caught a little rain, pretty sure JJ caught a lot more.
JJ, post up when you can to let us know the details of that last leg for you. Pictures to follow. We are starving and must get food. Kawboy said he got your text. [thumbsup] Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: kingbaby on September 20, 2009, 03:58:07 PM [clap] Hooligans prevail !!! Thank you for trying to hook up JJ's baby KRJ [bow_down] We're crossin' borders now. Those Denver guys might as well hand over the keys to the city [laugh] The weather looked pretty good this afternoon on this side of the border. A storm cell went plowing through south of Taos, but that looked like the worst weather around here today. The general forum is covered in bad stories, so this one makes me glad to be a part of this group. KRJ just told me you made it home. Welcome home JJ ! Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: KRJ on September 20, 2009, 07:09:50 PM Glad everything worked out OK, when Shannon and I got back to town the Guys from Fremont Motorsports, our local shop, had called and were waiting to open and get Us a tire, a little late but willing to help on sunday. Damn good people. We got a little wet but beat the brunt of the storm..Good seeing all, was a short but fun ride for us.. We can now all call JJ the "Silver Streak".. Work beckons early, night.. Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: kingbaby on September 20, 2009, 07:34:50 PM "Silver Streak" I love it!
Good night all. Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: bonfy on September 21, 2009, 11:17:48 AM Yes, KRJ, I'm always glad to know you are down there in Canyon City when I'm riding in that territory because I know you will hook me up if I have any trouble. You've got the shop and contacts to make it happen. It was really fun riding with you and Shannon out 50 to Salida.
And then last night, Pete called from Los Lunas and when I relayed the entire saga, he said he had a sport tire the right size in his garage he's been trying to sell or even give away...a Dunlap Qualifier with at least 1000 miles left on it. He said he wished I'd called because he could've contacted the duplex owner to let us in to get it. I hesitated because I knew he'd have his garage dooor opener with him, (he's pointed that out to me before) and didn't think anyone else would be around to let us in. Plus he's in NM on a much more somber occasion than our particular motorcyle calamity of the moment and I didn't want to intrude upon his scene. I am rephrasing my previous post because it isn't me who should be thanking everyone, it's not like it was my kid, just one of my best riding buddies, who had the worn tire. He has thanked everyone profusely already. I was just impressed with everyone who tried to help from their various locations, including DDGM who called around to the Denver crew, Scottish, who had some great ideas and input, and KB and Dusty who also contributed their ideas for sockets and possible solutions. In the end, JJ made it happen by riding safely and managing to squeeze a few hundred miles out of a dead tire. Good job, JJ! [thumbsup] It was a blast seeing you again and thanks for making the effort to come up! It definitely upped the adrenalin factor a few points. Can't wait till 4/20/10 to make another fudge run! Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: JJ on September 21, 2009, 01:39:34 PM Wow, I should be thanking everyone for their support and generosity! Our group is just wonderful...& resourceful....in times of need everyone voluteered their best!!! [clap]
Thanks a ton Bonfy. Kawboy (their spirits fly the sky!), KRJ & Shannon, DDGM, Kingbaby, Hans, Scotish & The guys at the Jap dealership at Florence, CO. [beer] I had an amazing ride, perhaps the test of a lifetime in riding...On one end, my tires were almost gone..beyond belief on a rather expensive machine I could not risk, not because it is a machine, but because it is everything!!! On the other end, I got pelted by rain that felt like spears through skin, bitten by bugs...drenched with an already heavy 22lb gear, 49 degrees felt like freezing at 80+...Try my tire on a wet road? well that was a luxury I lacked as well...But we (YES WE) made every painstaking mile grateful that all tried and I had to make it back and keep this precious upright...I had to always push to reach the glorified sunny horizon that always seemed a distant reality with the rain gods chasing...high speeds, high risks...still a miracle I made it...Here's pictures that speak the story...I'm sure others have more...All said and done, it was worth the trip and I'll not hesitate to invest in the Pirelli Dragon SuperCorsa's! All the more, I need that wretched key to remove the rear wheel in an emergency! A ride makes a difference, even more the bike, but today I'd add that the people aound you make the best of everything! [bow_down] Finally, bowing down to the unimaginable sight in my garage after the ordeal! The so called silver streak for a reason...Or rather my take..Poor man's operation of an un-poor bike... ;D (http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm38/joel_jacob/CIMG3355.jpg) (http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm38/joel_jacob/CIMG3354.jpg) Farewell ride..Bon Voyage! Wish I was there! JJ I bet you had at least 2mm of rubber between you and a blowout...no biggie :o Glad you made it home safe. Here's a thought...when its raining find a place to stop and wait for the rain to stop....just saying....its a thought. ;) Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: kingbaby on September 21, 2009, 05:51:54 PM There is a reason our group has happy endings. We take care of each other.
On the general forum there are tons of stories of "Doom & Gloom", but not so many of "Bad gone good" (actually there are zero). Rage on! Title: Re: Ride To The Springs Post by: Kawboy on September 21, 2009, 09:07:43 PM And you thought JJ had a ride back. HA!! Left the Springs today around noon after checking weather.com online. It appeared I was to have some rainy weather down to about Pueblo and then looked like I would run outof it. It was not to be though. When I left the Bonfy residence it was raining and around 38 degrees. Fortunately I had brought all my winter gear or I wouldn't have even attempted it. Rain all the the way to Pueblo. Not too bad. I can handle rain. South of Pueblo my thermometer started heading south also. By the time I got to Colorado City, Snow was mixed with the rain and I was discovering my "water proof" gloves, were not. I needed to warm up the hands and feet and top off the tank. Hit the Subway there and half an hour later was back on the road. Temp was now 35 and it wasn't a snow/rain mix anymore. All snow now, but not that heavy. Heading south to Walsenberg the snow started to get heavier and heavier. I had to stop at Walsenberg. The snow was so heavy I couldn't keep my visor clean and my wind screen was snow packed. Hung around a gas station there for about half an hour until the snow lighten a little. Some one coming from the south said that at Trinidad it was rain and from Raton south was no rain. Back onto the road again. Still snowing not as heavy though. BTW, my gloves are soaked. Made it to Trinidad but it wasn't rain. Still snowing. Pressed on with one through: To make it over Raton Pass. Make it that far and the worst will be over. Temp is now 32 and a slight hint of slush on the road. 45 mph up the pass, snowing hard. Made it over. Coming down the New Mexico side, no snow and a light rain. Stopped in Raton to fuel up, eat, and thaw out; fingers and toes both numb. It took a little over 5 hours to get to Raton. Left there a little after 5:30 with overcast and no rain. Finally I can nail it now. Got home just before 8 averaging somewhere around 100 with a gas stop in Las Vegas. The bike was flawless. That's more than I can say about the weather. Quite a mission, though. [moto] [moto]
