Title: Lowering headlight. Rivet method.
Post by: mookieo2 on September 13, 2009, 06:13:29 AM
I lowered my headlight and gauges about a year ago using rivets. I didn`t post the how to until I fealt that it would hold up for a long time. I have put it through the test and am happy with the results. I didn`t take too many pics of the process but it is fairly simple.

I took the gauges off, headlight, headlight mounting tabs, blinkers, etc. Take off the u bracket that holds all of these things together. I then took an angle grinder and cut off the tabs. I grinded the welds off of the u bracket and tabs until it was smooth.

I positioned the tab about two inches( double check this) down onto the u bracket and marked three holes. I center punched and drilled the holes for 1/8" stainless steel rivets. ( Make sure you use stainless rivets)

I inserted the rivets and used a standard rivet gun to attach the tabs. After I measured it up against the bike with the gauges and cut off what I need to mount them under the triples. I used a combination of some spacers and some m5 x 200 bolts that I found at Lowes. I then used some m5 acorn nuts on top to finish it off.( I`ll get som pics of this when I get a chance)

This is before I cut the u bracket shorter to relocate the gauges under the triples.

you know, I have to say I am kinda digging this mod. Gets around the tricky issue of welding aluminium. Nicely done, sir!  [bacon]

I am just about to take this project on.
Is that a pre-2001 bracket or am I just not seeing the headlight tabs?

Headlight tabs are unbolted.

I`ll try to get more pics u soon. I`m changing my clipons and masters soon.

I think I have the bolt for the gauges wrong I don`t think its an m5 should be smaller.

Bump

Plan on doing this while the GF is out of town this weekend.  If I don't get some more details on it, I might end up staying in the basement on the xBox all weekend!

My friend has a 748 and his friend has a 998 and is trying to make it a 998R. He got the left overs and his left overs trickled down to me, Forks, brakes, masters, for $0.  ;D

looks pretty good.  I don't think I can lower my headlight & gauges right now because of my clip ons.  They have a 1.5" rise and I have them mounted "above" my top triple.  It just looks funny that the gauges would be so low from the risers.

Damn, that looks really good however you've got a nice windscreen to cover everything up.  My "risers"  are not off to the sides like yours, but just infront of the triple.  I was thinking of painting the upper triple, clipons and risers black to kind of make it less visible.

Well, you could mock it up without cutting anything and see how it looks.

If both triple clamps match, that would look good.

how far did you guys lower your headlight brackets.  I'm having a buddy do mine away from the bike and none of the posts i've seen for the multiple methods says a measurement of exactly how low people moved the brackets.
