I will be there for the annual AFP Conference, so days will be tight and I have a few early evening obligations.


What are the must see attractions of the city? (please don't tell me Oakland)

Mr Inc told me that Castro St is a must see.

Typically the last Thursday of the month, but if you post up in the MOB we often can rally up an additional ZG night for visitors.

What kinda bars do you like?  Trendy or dive?  Funky cocktails or good beer or big wine selection?

What sort of attractions are you looking for?  Touristy type stuff?  Outdoor activities?  There's plenty to do.  Are you renting a car or relying on public transit / taxis?

I'll post up in that board as we get closer and I know my schedule better. I will have business functions I need to attend, which I am in the process of planning.


I prefer dive bars over trendy ones. Sure, I like a nice bar every now and then, but usually get more flavor of a city when you hit the dive bars. Not to mention, you don't pay an arm and a leg.

I mostly enjoy european beers and bourbon (spidey?).

As for attractions..............

yeah, I guess touristy is what I would do. Obviously want to see Fisherman's Wharf, the houses from Full House, the golden gate bridge, Haight and Ashbury, and whatever else there is. I won't have time for any museums.


I would like a kick ass sushi place...........price is no concern as company is picking up that one  [thumbsup]



It looks like I am staying at the Hotel Palomar. Looks nice and is close to Macone Convention center

stay till the 11th.... ldd is happening and I'll be up there for that

Lots of places to go, my personal preference for dive bars is the Mission District (where ZG is).


If you have time, I highly recommend Alcatraz.  You might have to get tickets a day or two in advance.
Fall is the best time of weather so hopefully you will luck out with no fog for the GG bridge.  There are places you can get a cheap bicycle rental and ride across the bridge and back. 
The cable cars are a fun touristy thing to check out.
Also go up to Coit Tower and check out the views (assuming a clear day).
While you are over by Fisherman's Wharf stop by Ghirardelli square.
I like the Ferry building, it's like a big somewhat upscale farmers market.

It's a suggestion. ;D

spidey will gladly spend your company's sushi dime.

i walked all the way from the wharf to soma one night.

there are some shady parts of town (like the tenderloin), but i didn't have any issues and really didn't unsafe.

I feel comfortable walking around by myself in most SF neighborhoods at night.

Don't forget to bring layers, the weather will vary a lot between the daytime and night and in different parts of the city.

Just like any big city, be aware of your surroundings. The Tenderloin is generally not reccommended, drugs and hookers, and all the fun stuff that goes with them.

Kilowatzs and Ace are also good bars like Zeigeist, and close by.

I probably owe him a roll or two or ten.





Not my first time to a large city, so watching your surroundings is the key, but was looking for (which was provided) an area to completely avoid.


I'll have to start checking out a map to see what is walkable and what is not.

Coolness! You should post up on the MOB board since a lot of folks don't bother with NMC.

Also, last I recall you had the toaster. If this is so, you must bring it.

I gave the Toaster to Mario (Grifo) a few months back. I believe the Toaster is in Chicago right now.


Now............

I am going to be in Chicago this weekend (Libertyville) so if someone can locate the Toaster, I can pick it up and then bring out in October.

I always felt fine walking around SF. Some areas are shady, but not particularly dangerous IMO. Stepping over tweakers/bums in the Mission/Tenderloin was more of an annoyance than a hazard. The only time I ever worried was driving though Hunter's Point...but here's no reason you would ever go there.

I liked the Elbow Room in the Mission...they had cool bands a lot of the time and was generally a fun place. I also liked Lucky 13 (I *think* it's near the edge of the Mission  ???). It was just a cool bar IMO...nothing fancy.

Bottom of the Hill also was a cool place to see bands (Potrero Hill (sp?))

Personally I'd skip the stupid "Full House" houses, and go see Alcatraz...it's pretty cool.

Anchor Steam is also on Potrero Hill.

Keep in mind...I haven't lived there since 2003, and even then I only worked in SF and ocassionally went there to drink. I lived in Oakland...you GOTTA go to Oakland!  [cheeky] Actually there are some really nice places in Oakland...try Everett & Jones BBQ in Jack London Square...or try the University location in Berkeley if you want the authentic experience...really good Q.  [thumbsup]

it's a very entertaining walkaround.

Not all of Berkeley (the school or the city) is over the top liberal. It's also one of the nicest places in the Bay Area. If you go up to Cal's stadium you'll get one of the best views of the Bay Area around. People who've never been there have the notion that Berkeley is a tree-huggin, granola eating, pot smoking wonderland. While there is that element (as there are in other cities), it by no means defines the whole city.

Just like people think Oakland is just a giant gang land. Also not true. There are some very nice and cool parts of that city as well.

I saw that one and then noticed a new one was built a year or two ago.

it is right across the street from my conference.

Hopefully someone can scrounge a bike up-if not, there are a number of moto rental places to rent from-you should consider it. It's enough to make one leave Ohio  :P

The Mark Hopkins is the one with the Top of the Mark, both should be very nice. [thumbsup]

The Hotel Palomar is actually also quite nice as well.

That place did look nice, but I was required to book through our corporate travel company (which blows and is way overpriced) and Hotel Palomar wasn't on there for some reason. Therefore, I booked the nicest one in the area since if we are required to use this stupid overpriced service, might as well do it up right.

Yup...

I drove 4+ hours and hung out at Logan all because I wanted a free drink.
