Title: Immobilizer issues?
Post by: S2ROCKET on September 16, 2009, 12:22:13 PM
I know there are several threads on this issue but I am still confused. First, some background info. I purchased a salvaged 05' S2R 800 with a completely demolished dash. I bought a used dash on ebay from an S4R, installed it and of course the immobilizer kicks in. I only have one black key, no code card. This is my first rebuild so please forgive my ignorance. So am I just screwed here or what? The tech at my dealership says I will need new keys, new ecu, new dash, new ignition switch, and gas/seat lock. Total cost from dealer around $2,784.00. That's a big ouch!!! What are my options? I need help!

unless someone is able to reflash the ECU for you, i think you are screwed. Not even sure if you can use the S4R dash with the 800, so you might want to verify that before spending any more money in that direction.

best bet would be to find a used s2r800 ECU, Dash, lockset, keys (including the red one.) i know that is a long shot, but there it is...

That's what I figured, the S4R dash plugs right into the S2R harness, the gauges sweep, fuel pump activates, lights turn on, blinkers, high beams turn signals all work. Of course immobilizer light flashes once, twice then stays on. I guess I'll just have to keep a look out for the whole set! Thanks for the info!

This reflash I keep hearing about, will this solve my problem. Will the immobilizer bypass reflashed ecu?

There is a company that reflashes everything for like around $500 I think, although I have no FHE or link for you.

Alternatively...nemesis? or other aftermarket ecu? you could be the micro-squirt guinea pig? ;D

PM MonsterMash, he does DP ECU reflashes which include immobilizer deletes, for $450.

He also reflashes to spec removing the immobilizer for $250

Do you have first hand experience with this?

I sent Monstermash a working ECU that we wanted reflashed to change out the gauges. This ECU was reflashed and returned to us and it never worked and would not start the bike. After going back and forth for months with Monstermash, the end result was still the same, the bike would not run.

He promised multiple times to refund the payment of $450 and even currently (several months after) still has the ECU, but we've never gotten any refund and the ECU never worked.

caveat emptor

One of the techs at AMS Ducati here in Dallas tells me reflashing ecu only works on 07 models on up. Regardless it's still a pricey alternative and doesn't seem to be a sound solution? I just found all the parts that I need ecu, ignition switch, keys, tank lock and seat lock for $500.00 plus a trade for my ecu, ignition switch, etc. Sweeeeet!

+1  [thumbsup]  Sooner or later someone has to try it.  This immobilizer thing seems like it's completely out of line.  I think there's some sort of class action thing going on with plastic tanks and it seems to me the immobilizer problems should be up there too.

Bikes get stolen by being tossed into the back of a van, no one steals a bike by riding away with it these days.  The immobilizers are a complete negative.

I got a reflashed ecu from ducatidepot.com for $450. I have been riding with it for almost 6 months now, everyday, with no problems at all. No more immobilizer, and he flashed it to the ducati performance spec, so the bike is running sweet!

OK, let me get this right. STEP 1- Acquire a re-flashed ecu OR get current ecu re-flashed. STEP 2- Acquire "ANY" dash OR use current dash even if unit is not married with said ecu and delete immobilizer. STEP 3- Plug in re-flashed ecu and dash and enjoy!
Question, does the immobilizer deletion occur within the Dash or ECU? I apologize if that was a stupid question, just want to make sure  I have this right. On another note, installed my used married ECU/DASH today and my salvage S2R came to life today for the very first time since I bought her 2 months ago! I'm so happy I could cry! I think I'm gonna go grab a couple of cold ones now! [beer]

The immobilizer goes away in the ecu. The ecu will then work with whatever dash you install on the bike. I am not even using Ducati gauges. I have a set of acewell gauges on mine that work fine. Ducatidepot did not need an exchange ecu. I kept my original one as a back-up, and now use the ecu that they reflashed for me.

accrocker, that's the clearest answer that I've gotten or found so far. Thanks for the info! It'll def come in handy later when I upgrade my old dash.
