Been an huge SP fan for about 14 years now, just thought I would pass along a cool thing they are doing coming soon.

"I'm happy to finally announce the plans for the new Smashing Pumpkins album.
Recording began yesterday, September 15th, 2009 on the new record which will be entitled 'Teargarden by Kaleidyscope'. The album will feature 44 songs, 4 of which are now being recorded. My desire is to release a song at a time beginning around Halloween of this year, with each new release coming shortly after until all 44 are out. Each song will be made available absolutely for free, to anyone anywhere. There will be no strings attached. Free will mean free, which means you won't have to sign up for anything, give an email address, or jump through a hoop. You will be able to go and take the song or songs as you wish, as many times as you wish."

Billy is my kinda guy.
I went back to listening to SP after years away... they still kick ass. Hoping to see them in concert, if they ever come around.
Nothing is free unless it is given in the name of charity. How much will those concert tickets be again?
Always did like those guys...
I've disliked their music for years, but they've done an awesome job in staying ahead of the curve in distribution and fan-accessibility. Art for art's sake is a great ethos.
woo hoo!
i need more punkins.
i never got to see them in concert the first go around. i hope they are as good.
the thing that worries me is this...how many of the original members are there? the site won't open for some reason.
they did a free outdoor show in Minneapolis a few years back. Way cool.
To me, the quality of the Pumpkins' work tapered off starting with Siamese Dream, but Gish is still one of my top 20 favorite albums of all time -it had that distinctive early 90s wall of grunge sound. I always thought Butch Vig was underappreciated as a producer compared to Steve Albini. I will take Nevermind over In Utero any day of the week - is a better album both in substance and treatment.
As for the original members, they were placeholders. It was Billy Corgan and the drummer that wrote and recorded everything. James Iha and the fem-bot bassists just showed up for concerts.
Anyways, yay for new, free material. I hope it sounds like their early stuff.

Pretty smart idea, actually.
Artists don't make any money (they make a little, not a lot) selling records.
So.......
let's give our songs away, with a cool hook........it will bring our fans back........and they'll drop 65$ on a concert ticket, which is where they really make their money.
Personally, I didn't think they were even around anymore. They really started sucking after they were fantastic, but not many bands can keep it going.
The best musician they had was when Kenny Aronoff was playing with them. damn, that guy can play the drums.

+1.
Gish is right up there in my top few albums of the 90's.
I AM THE THREAD RE-ANIMATOR!!!
Anyways, four free, dowloadable songs from the 'Pumpkins.

I don't have much good to say about them unfortunately. A little too much polish and not nearly enough substance for me. It is Smashing Pumpkins-flavored music. If you like the newer stuff, you are probably more likely to like this, but those hoping for Gish-era sounds may be as disappointed as me...
Edit:
Listen to this four times instead - it is a better way to spend about 16 minutes :)

Yeah, I'd say my opinion of it is lukewarm. I'll probably buy the album since they aren't bad songs and I'm still a punkins fan, but overall not really the same as they used to be.
I guess I better get used to that, I doubt they will ever sound the same as they did in the 90's. That's an era that is over.
not quite melloncollie/infinite sadness, still way better than zwan.
it's billy/the drummer in the pumpkins with new guitarist and bassist
James Iha was in a perfect circle for a while but is now in 'The Virgins' with former bassist D'arcy
Same name, not the same band.
Saw billy solo before the pumpkins were together again and it was just a bunch of sad people standing around in zero shirts.
Very cool indeed. My partial hearing loss is due to Cherub Rock. [bang] [thumbsup]
Cherub Rock.
best. album. ever. [clap] X 1million
I've got nearly all the albums on vinyl....MCIS for some reason is like $800
